These signings are great for sens to deal them at deadline in hopes of them becoming a decent player for a contending playoff team on a budget, with gally and Perry big signed ifts a very cheap gamble to have a high reward a la namestnikov ducliar etc. So hopefully we get great 2021 picks for these players if they end up having a great season.

Michael Stuart: Senators Sign Galchenyuk; Rumored Interest in Perry

With this signing I think there's realistically two open spots for Ottawa's forward prospects? Stuzle, Brown, Batherson,

So I really hope they don't sign Perry to any kind of deal.

Any thoughts on what Dorian is doing here? Let most of the prospects play in Belleville and overseas for this year ? Wouldn’t it be better to start getting them Low pressure NHL experience?

If they get Perry too, then it might be that management is viewing their upcoming line-up with rosier coloured glasses than they should. Adding these two (if that's what they actually end up doing) suggests they think they're closer to going deep in the playoffs (assuming they make them) than is realistic. It's probably likelier they're planning to try to flip these two at trade deadline, but that's a bit of a gamble.

Something does not add up.

A month ago I thought the Sens might have as many as 6 roster openings. But, opportunities for the kids to move up are being significantly diminished.

On the other hand, if the season is shortened in terms of both dates and games, it is possible that the trade deadline will occur within two months of the start of the season and that is the time when the kids would move up.

I have to think that they were kicking tires on perry and ended up going with Watson instead. it makes no sense to have both, as at this point in their careers they bring exactly the same thing. Perry's days of being an offensive contributor at the NHL level are far far in the past, at this point he's little more than a 4th line agitator who provides a physical presence.....which is EXACTLY what Watson was brought in for.

right now they have 8 forwards on 1 way deals, plus Tkachuk who's a lock......so those 9 forwards are (and this is not representative of lines, just throwing names in):

tkachuk - white - dadonov
paul - Tierney - C. Brown
anisimov - galchenyuk - Watson

that means there are 4 spots left (if you include the extra forward) to be fought over by Batherson, Brown, Norris, Stuetzle, Balcers. IMO, those are the 5 guys who, barring something crazy at camp, have the most chance of cracking the roster.....I think Formenton and Abromov are probably AHL bound for another year. if you assume that the team is indifferent about having guys like Anisimov and Watson in the press box, then that's at least 4 spots in the starting lineup for the young guys. i'm okay with that, having 1/3 of your forward group as rookies is probably about as much as you want to have

I'm fine with the Galchenyuk signing based on current forward depth for the team. I think Dorion should be now finished for off-season signings of RFAs.

forward locks: 9 players
Brady Tkachuk
Evgeni Dadonov
Colin White
Artem Anisimov
Connor Brown
Chris Tierney
Austin Watson
Nick Paul
Alex Galchenyuk

forward promotions: 3
Josh Norris
Drake Batherson
Tim Steutzle or Alex Formenton

extra forwards: 8
Alex Formenton or Tim Steutzle
Matt Peca
JC Beaudin
Jonathan DAvidsson
Filip Chlapik
Logan Brown
Rudolf Balcers

08th Pick - Derrick Pouliot - (Reserve D-man)
09th Pick - Jacob Trouba - (good pick)
10th Pick - Slater Koekkoek - (not bad but not 10th ovr)

That is really ugly. I thought maybe it meant some real gems might have been found in the lower rounds. Sportsnet did a backdraft on the 2012 draft. Not a very impressive list, especially when you consider that 4 of the top 10 on the redraft are goalies.

1. Andrei Vasilevskiy (19th, Tampa Bay)
2. Connor Hellebuyck (130th, Winnipeg)
3. Filip Forsberg (11th, Washington)
4. Morgan Rielly (5th, Toronto)
5. Matt Murray (83rd, Pittsburgh)
6. Jacob Trouba (9th, Winnipeg)
7. Jaccob Slavin (120th, Carolina)
8. Tom Wilson (16th, Washington)
9. Frederik Andersen (87th, Anaheim)
10. Tomas Hertl (17th, San Jose)

Perry had one Canadian destination he would go to and that is Ottawa, one of his favourite players is Daniel Alfredsson. I have been really curious where Corey Perry will end up. He fits the mould of what teams want now since the Blues and Tampa won the cup. He competes hard and can make goals happen. He might not be a finisher anymore but what he does on the ice leads to goals. A natural fit with Ottawa right now? maybe not? but his style of play is attractive.

I would have preferred Perry over Watson, but now that Watson is here, I am not sure Perry has a place on the team. It would be interesting to see him signed as that would close another roster spot for a prospect.

Interesting to see trade speculation with some of the comments. Not really sure that is in the cards unless it is for a prospect with 1st line potential which will cost you picks and prospects. With that said, Dorion has surprised before.

Much better to not rush your prospects. Bring in a guy like Perry who can show the young kids the ropes and then trade him at TDL.

Last thing you want are kids struggling and not sending them down.

They’re buying a draft pick. If Galchenyuk can be decent, they can flip him at the deadline for a pick. That’s the real gamble: will Galchenyuk play well enough to even bring back a 3rd rounder?

You have to find a balance between youth and veterans. Not sure if Alex is the guy for that but someone like Perry who'd play down in the line up would be a good mentor.

The Sens should sign them and then trade at deadline. Young players can play when the inevitable injuries occur. Don't want them getting used to losing... They'll be improved compared to last season and then next season guys can come up full-time. Don't have the lineup be full of rookies right off the bat.

Perry is one of the dirtiest and cheapest players in the game. I have never liked him. I really hope he doesn't come to Ottawa.
