I found it odd Sam got a shout out for moving up the food chain but allvin who got a nice write up about how he has put 15 years in was denied similar consideration.

Sorry to hear you didn’t get the job RW... How did the interview go? Did you show GMJR your charts and graphs and share your opinions on Jack Johnson?

I've always liked Allvin. He's a decent option for the position.

Never heard of Alvin before, but he’s not Tallon so I’m happy. I know Jim listens to his lieutenants a lot so it’ll be interesting to see how Alvin’s vision affects our strategy.

I guess some research could be done, but I think it was just that he doesn't know much about Allvin, but has followed Ventura for years.

I'm fine with no GM in waiting. Nothing wrong with getting the next GM from outside the organization. Allvin is pretty young though so maybe that is in his future after a few years as an assistant GM.

So he now has 2 jobs? Since they didn't back fill his previous role? Sounds like a salary savings. Oh and with no tallon (thats a win by itself), JR has created a gap between him and the "next man up" further securing his job. Thats definitely intentional. He will die in that chair. Went from a 2 year contract to a life contract.

I don’t think Rutherford needs to do that. From Yohe it sounds like he has unlimited job security as is regardless of who’s behind him. Like Tojo, though, I don’t really care if we have a legit GM in waiting or not so long as the Assistant GM is good at his job. Rutherford listens to his Lieutenants and Rutherford won’t be fired, so it’s much more important to me that the lieutenants are good at being lieutenants than them being ready to step into the GM roll. It’s why I wanted Bots back. After Buffalo, I’m not really keen on him taking over as GM for us, but he made an excellent lieutenant here.

I am curious about how much power Ventura got out of this promotion. I know in the NBA president of basketball ops translates into final decision over personnel, and often times the President of Basketball Ops is above the GM in the FO org chart if the same person doesn’t hold both positions. I’m assuming President of Hockey Ops isn’t nearly as powerful of a position.

Yeah..... JR is finishing out the Sid/Geno era....for better or worse. Probably worse. I'd love to know why Karmonos was sent packing. He's been with JR for so long. Was it salary? Performance?

I'm curious about this as well. It seemed to blindside all the beat writers and their sources.

To Vic's post, Kamaros was the guy between Ventura and GMJR. Technically Allvin is now, but given that his background is in scouting while Kamaros was supposedly am analytics guy, I'd guess Ventura will have a larger voice and I believe some responsibilities like salary cap management are new.

You would always here stat people say the Pens must be ignoring Ventura with some of their pickups, so maybe that was a problem with Kamaros. But I'm wildly speculating at thia point.

It's really interesting because Karmanos was with Rutherford for so long. Combine that fact with the last few years of poor trades and signings. Could Rutherford be hanging some blame on him? Could ownership be saying.... "Hey Jim.... What the fvck with all these stiffs that can't play?" "We don't like paying bad players to not play for the Penguins." "We're not the Yankees."

Also.... Did any of these new guys help Jim with this offseason work? If they did, I'm not encouraged. Didn't take a genius to punt JJ, but the acquisitions (sans Kap) are lame at best.

This goes back to my post a while back about the trend of FOs putting old school guys at the head of analytics departments. I’m not saying that’s what happened in Pittsburgh, but it’s definitely possible.

I wonder if RW is going to mention Dom L piece in the Athletic today. He has the Pens ranked 3rd in "contract efficiency" for the upcoming season. Behind only the B's and Av's.

You'd think Matheson and Tanev would drag us down more, but we also have four of the best contracts in the league in Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, and Letang. All the free agency acquisitions we got this year obviously are no good, but they're all on small contracts. Ceci is the biggest one and its still not a huge deal. Ceci is only an on ice problem, not really a cap problem. Kind of like how Tanev is a cap problem, not an on ice problem.

EDIT: Oh and Rust has turned into a sneakily excellent contract over the past two seasons, and Marino being on ELC is probably a big boost too.

This is true this year and was true last year

It's why people blaming JJ and his 3 Million for "Holding us back" and the 500k that Tanev makes is garbage. There is enough value on the roster to give us advantages and if our total of "Overpays" adds up to 3 or 4 million, remind yourself that EVERY other team has a bad contract or to that likely exceeds the bad/overpays that the Penguins have

Crosby making 8.7 could be making 11
Malkin at 9.5 could be making 11
Guentzel at 7.5
Letang at 8.5
Rust at 4.5-5
Marino at at least 4
Dumo at 5-5.5
Goaltending at 4.75 (Most teams at 8-10 combined goaltending)
