Maybe the JVR + Ghost trade for Gaudreau fell apart. So they are offering that for Nylander now. JVR's best days were in Toronto. Ek, do you think this is the deal being discussed?
Or maybe it's just Nylander straight up for Ghost and then the Leafs sign Hoffman too. Hoffman is from just outside Toronto so that makes sense. |

And what say you??? What would the Flyers have to give to get Willie?
And don't cop out and say you would not trade him!

I don't believe the Flyers are interested in acquiring Nylander nor do I believe Dubas is interested in trading him. The Leafs roster is set. Dubas already said it. I realize NHL GM's are compulsive liars. But if Dubas were trading Nylander it would've been before the draft. Flyers are likely more interested in trading for Laine. |

Ok, not what I asked but it probably a more realistic answer.

First of all guys, if Ek is reporting this then obviously there is still some smoke here.
But one thing that makes zero sense to me, and would love Ek to explain it, is...
The Leafs reshaped the roster this offseason, threading the needle around the cap, adding a bunch of cheap guys like Spezza, Thornton, Simmonds, Vesey, Bogosian. I'm sure they would have liked to get a "better" upgrade on some of those roles, but they had no cap space. Now the roster is set. So you are telling me that after all that work they are going to ship Nylander and his $7M cap hit out the door for...who? It better be $7M coming back otherwise they did all of these cap gymnastics for nothing. So a deal like Nylander for Myers or Sanheim might make sense from a hockey standpoint, but it doesn't really help the Leafs right now. If they wanted to do that, then they would have done it far earlier, and used the extra cap space to make better signings than junk like Simmonds and Vesey. Philly isn't trading Proorov. The kids don't make sense. Ghost has negative value. So this makes absolutely zero sense to me.
But if Ek is hearing this then I guess its still on the table. |

Actually it doesn't. Taking on Gostisbehere and JVR adds 11.5M to the cap. Subtract Nylander at 6.9M and that has the end result of the Leafs taking on 4.5M. How do they do that when they're already over the limit?
Unless Hoffman is coming real cheap, that doesn't make sense either.

Hey I'm just connecting the dots since Ek has reported that JVR + Ghost were being offered for Gaudreau. So maybe the same for Nylander. Leafs could include Kerfoot to make the cap work better. Ek also said Hoffman might have to sign a cheaper 1-year deal. So Nylander for Ghost saves the Leafs $2.5M. They offer Hoffman $2.5M. He scores 50 goals with Matthews and Marner, and then he cashes in next year.
As I wrote earlier, I don't think any of this makes sense, but just connecting the dots on Ek's rumour. It's also an E4 so that's pretty high. |

Yea, no offense but you're still not making sense. Hoffman isn't signing for 2.5M. Chances are Hoffman already has a deal in principle made and is just waiting for a team to clear space.

If Leafs are open to trading Nylander then I think Calgary should get in on the discussion: Maybe a three team trade like this
Calgary - William Nylander 31 G 28 A 59 Pts
New Jersey - Johnny Gaudreau 18 G 40 A 58 Pts
Toronto - Kyle Palmieri 25 G 20 A 45 Pts
Toronto saves 2.3 Million in cap space they can put toward a defenseman and Palmeiri potentially improves point totals playing with better players. Calgary gets Nylander for 4 years and brings with him the hopes that Nylander can score more in the playoffs and New Jersey gets a very skilled and talented home talent who will likely re-sign after 2 years. There may have to be other bits and pieces but this is the main part of what I think would be a win-win-win. |

Not many teams have $5-6M to sign Hoffman. He might have to accept a $2.5M deal and hope to put up big numbers and cash in when Covid is in the rear view mirror. Ek has already hinted at this. Also remember that it isn't just Hoffman...if he demands $6M then you can look at Duclair, Granlund, Sheary, Frolik, Athanasiou, Haula. Lots of guys are looking for a job. Look at defense - Vatanen, Hamonic. I think Chara is staying in Boston but Ek said he is in play, big time. |

You might be on to something. Nylander was born in Calgary. Although so was Taylor Hall. Wondering if Ek has heard rumours about Nylander and the Flames? Maybe an E2? |

I can’t tell who’s being serious and who’s just making fun of EK and his nonsensical, non-existent trade rumours
But we can all agree that JVR is one of the worst contracts in the league, right? If you attached two first-round picks to that deal, it might get you a fourth line player with one year left on his deal. And Ghost also has negative value, so to suggest that would be the return for Nylander, a guy who would have been close to 40 goals this year, and is signed to a long term deal with a reasonable cap hit, is as dumb as Ek’s blog
The Leafs have already put all their pieces in place. If there was a deal, it would have been a month ago. And it would have been something like Sanheim or Myers + picks / prospects for Willy |
