Bill Meltzer: Wrap: Islanders 2 - Flyers 1 (OT)

Not quite good enough to be a serious contender for the playoffs, and not quite bad enough to be in the mix for a lottery pick. Mediocrity sucks...it’s like every year for this team is Groundhog Day. Hard to be optimistic about anything when it comes to Flyers’ hockey.

The pass from Farabee was a too hard, but Ghost really needs to concentrate and not redirect it so far away from him in OT too boot.. Its not like it was a slapshot! Ghost was already thinking of turning with it. It was like a receiver who is already starting to think of going upfield and his mind was not on the puck.

Pity because he had a nice game otherwise.

Don't make any trades until Good old Chucky is fired, clear out the management first, get rid of Therrien but keep Alain! Alain has nothing to work with so no point in replacing him!
Then you need to do a full cleaning and keep Provorov, Farabee and Hart. Perhaps move the team to a new city and don't tell the rest of the team.

Don't make any trades until Good old Chucky is fired, clear out the management first, get rid of Therrien but keep Alain! Alain has nothing to work with so no point in replacing him!

At least it was a fun game to watch. G looked good. Strange how nobody could finish on breakaways or when finding themselves with a prime opportunity. They all held on to it. Weird.

Looking at this game alone, I am back to the obvious: Myers and Sanheim were not ready for the responsibility handed them this year, and the Gustafson signing was terrible. Braun signing lousy too -- yet another #6 defenseman at best! If we could have afforded a UFA stud damn, or even just traded for a solid #3 earning a little too much money on another team, this would have been a different year. Fletch put together a flunk on D, plain and simple. And we all watched him do it. The sky didn't fall, the forwards aren't all losers, etc. Our GM mishandled the D, and badly. Myers is a #6 at his age, not a #2.
Get Eckholm now? It doesn't matter. This season is over. You can't go back in time.

At least NoPa showed some life in this latest loss

They actually finished the plays, meaning they just didn’t just skate up and wave their stick at someone. They were aggressive in getting to and eliminating their man.

Do that again tonight. Run 4-0-1 next 5 and let’s see what we have.

It's not at all on Gostisbehere. The pass handcuffed him. He didn't purposely redirect it and there is not way he could control where it went when it bounced off of his stick.

The Braun signing wasn't lousy. Braun has played well and is one of the few players you can say has given his all pretty much every game. He can play on my 3rd pairing anytime. Myers is better than a #6.

I'll take Staal as a cheap rental to play on the 3rd pair and on the PK. Won't change anything but it's better than paying a kings ransom for a player who won't change anything.
