Good for Lowry to capitalize on having a great season in a weak North division. I am guessing that within a years time, we will be having discussions on how bad the contract is.

One good thing I will say about this contract is that its not as high as Brandon Tanev’s.

Would have preferred 3 years, but suspect he took a little less salary to stay here.

If this lowers Copp’s demands a bit, then I love it.
HOWEVER, paying a guy approaching his decline years that plays a style known for hitting the 30 cliff hard... is deeply concerning.

All in all, I’ll happily take Lowry and Copp for 7.5, but I’m a lot nervous about just Lowry and no Copp

With the signing of Lowry, the Jetss basically have 10 forwards (Connor, Scheifele, Wheeler, PLD, Ehlers, Harkins, Lowry, Applletin, Vesalainen and Gustafsson) signed for next year.
They also have 6 d-me signed (JoMo, DeMelo, Heinola, Niku, Samberg and Beauliey) plus 1 goalie (Hellebuyck).
Now if they should re-sign (estimated $$$): Copp - $5M, Lewis - $1M; Thompson - $1M - - Pionk - $6M; Stanley - $1.5M; Poolman - $2.5; and a Goalie - $1.5 - we would only have only approx $3M left on salary cap. Will/should they spend that to upgrade the D?

And a line-up of:
Connor-Scheif-Wheeler
Copp-PLD-Ehlers
Harkins-Lowry-Appleton
Vesalainen-Thompson-Lewis
Gustafsson

JoMo-Poolman
Heinola-Pionk
Stanley-DeMelo
- Niku, Beaulieu, Samberg

and Hellebuyck
Mr. X (Broissoit?)

- Probably Harkins or Appleton are claimed by the Krakens in Expansion Draft. I feel that a pre-draft deal has been struck

This Lowry signing leads me to believe:
1. Stastny and Perreault won't be re-signed (or Perreault at a reduced figure)
2. The Jets already know that Bryan Little is not coming back
3. Copp may pull a Trouba and only sign short-term until UFA

Anyways that's how I see 2021/22. Thoughts?

we can add Lowry to the list of Jets who may get selected by Kraken. Not a bad piece for a team to build with - a veteran 3/4th center with leadership ability, a fair contract with term and plays a heavy physical game. If a ticket to the coast is not what Lowry had in mind when signing this then Jets will need to compensate Seattle for not choosing him.

Jets are 100% protecting Lowry in one form or another. Pencil him in as a Jet next year. Pencil in Copp as well. As an RFA, he will sign at least something for a few more years. I'd guess at $4.4 MM AAV depending on the term. Chevy will offer up a 3rd or maybe even a second to keep Stanley and Apples will be off to the Kraken. Alternatively, Apples gets traded and we use that pick to protect Stanley. Something like that.

Also, PLD will be extended in the offseason. I'm thinking considering the cap situation it might be $6.5 for 5 years.

Too much $, and too much term. Lowry has shown many times that he has zero offensive abilities. Now with Appleton and Copp around him, he finally has mediocre numbers. His only saving grace is that he can be a difference maker when not scoring. Maurice needs to make sure Lowry is aware that he is still an intimidation guy, not a finesse guy.

So the Jets are going to have a worse forward group then this year and make one change on defense adding Heinola and subtracting Forbort.

That lineup will at best be a wild card team in the central next year.

You are right, I mis-counted the protect list and thought they were going to have to leave him exposed. Lowry is a Jet.

I read out there that in addition to the expansion draft that Seattle can sign RFAs and the team doesn't have the right to match the offer to retain the RFA. Is that correct?

I don’t think that Copp is sticking around Rexypoo. I think there are still some hard feelings left over, being scratched in game 6 against Vegas, and the arbitration hearings from last year. Trouba is also his best friend and Kurt Overhardt is his agent. Copp is also playing at such a high clip that he could and should demand at least 5 million a year.

Sadly, Lowry’s signing for me signals the beginning of the end of Copp on the Jets.

In this market, PLD is still a 5M AAV guy. He has shown promise, but also areas that need growth. So far in 2021, only Barzal has been paid north of 6.5M AAV (he got 7M), and he is a franchise player. Next guy to break the 6.5 Barrier dates back to 2020, including Hall, Pietrangelo, and Krug. Very few guys are getting paid these days.

Mantha, Dadanov, and Josh Anderson are probably more realistic comps ranging between 5.0-5.7 is probably a better comp. Even Iaffolo has better numbers and just re-upped with the Kings at 4M AAV.

If Copp wants 5M, he will happily be sacrificed to Seattle while Apples and Stanley keep driving this train forward.

If we go into next season with Thompson, Lewis, Poolman, and top pairing Morrissey all happening... we miss the playoffs hard.

Copp may already be out the door, we have no way of knowing if he wants to be here or not.

Plus 27-28 year olds are not signing 2-3 years deals, none of them, unless they are very bad and then they only get 1-2 year deals.

I won’t be giving Copp 5 mil, no chance. He may think he is worth this, but he is not.

I’m not resigning both Thompson and Lewis, and I’d give perreault another year over both of them.

I guess you’d be over paying guys like Darnell Nurse as well then right? Based on “this year”? Don’t be fooled by one year.

Prior to this year, he was a 10 goal 25 point guy. He will be 27 next year, it is very likely, this will be his best year!! Be careful.

It will also be Lowry's best offensive season too. His underlying numbers, especially against elite competition have been abysmal.

From my understanding that is not correct. I understand that Seattle can sign any RFA like they were their own. Any team in the league would have the right to match that offer, without having to give up any compensation. That’s my understanding anyway.
