Carol Schram: Buyouts on the table as offseason work begins for Canucks' GM Jim Benning Jim Benning is preparing for a busy offseason and says he'll have all the resources he'll need, including buyouts, as he works to improve his roster and get the Vancouver Canucks back into the playoff picture in 2021-22.

Vantel’s top ten prediction will probably come true at some point, but it won’t be next year for the moron that is Jim Benning. Having “all the resources” just means more of the same mistakes he’s been making for the past seven years.

Good luck in year eight

Thanks Carol. I don't see a point in buying out Roussel. Sending players to the minors teams saves 1.125 an increase of 50,000 over next season.

I don't know if 100k saved one year is worth another 600k the next season.

That's a good point. The Holtby numbers make a lot more sense, if they think they have a cheaper viable backup ready for next season.

I hope to see several buyouts, trades and some free-agent signings, as minivan mentioned, Roussel isn't worth the buyout, but Abbotsford pressbox for him and Loui would be fine.
Team needs to get better defensively, score more goals, and have better special teams

Nothing wrong with trading a 1st round pick for immediate help. That’s how we got Miller

Maybe if you're a cup contending team...

We shouldn't be mortgaging the future for immediate help when we are damn near the bottom of the league in almost every statistical category outside of goaltending.

Benning and the Sedins are proud men, they’ll want to turn this team around in a hurry.

This why we can't have nice things in Vancouver though. Proud men don't belong in management if they can't put their egos aside to make proper decisions for the better of the team/franchise and for its future.

Benning possibly gets fired if this team doesn’t clearly improve next year, he kinda has to improve the roster. FA is probably demanding it

Last season there were trades to be made for teams trying to clear a little space for others. I can see the same, Schmidt may not have been stellar on a team that was less than stellar but worth a 3rd still.

truth to that. Feel as if he has smartened up. If you could get 3 good years from Larsson what about 5 years 4.5 AAV same as Tanev AAV.

Still can't believe Myers has a higher AAV than that and has his entire career.

Ty as usual Carol

So Roussel at his age the knee injury hurt his usefulness imo. The cap savings not enough for a min cost replacement the 1st year.

Holtby same thing.

So trade & retain would be the better option. Avoids the 2nd year cap hit when more cap would come in very handy. The hope he could at least be a good scoring 3rd liner seems dead.

If JV is terminated that’s entirely different. It’d be a sad way to end it being he never panned out nor seemed inclined to be the best he could be.

I can see Holtby back unless JB wants & can ship to Seattle. Don’t see it.
Roussel has been passed & his spot will get filled by a kid imo.

At this point in time I struggle with how JB can be aggressive with limited options at his disposal. If he can surprise us with creativity the fanbase would be much more enthused.

I foresee targeting key UFA’s as what we can expect. Either or both being a top 4 RHD & 3C. Trading whom for what is the more difficult choice.

Trading a 1st to fill a big need is not a poor choice. It has to be a success.

That’s a big domino to fall but could be a reality given the uncertainty in this draft. Comes down to the decision to improve the team now or draft/develop which might not be what FA/JB have in mind.

I feelya & understand your view.

Now if the dominos & the order in which it plays out is done well could change that outlook. Comes down to the 1st big move & what comes after that. Crucial the order of events has been identified & executed.
