Nice read.
Chelios was definitely an interesting personally my sons played at the same youth program his sons did in Chicago. He was always at the rink and a very humble guy.
I need to get this book.

Thanks for that! That’s a very cool story. This book is definitely worth getting. I bought six copies (5 gifts + mine). Everyone has enjoyed it so far.

Waaaaay back in time (late 80s or so), I was stationed in upstate NY, about 70 miles south of Montreal. Chelly was w/the Habs. Post-games, many of the guys would go to a certain restaurant off of St. Catherine St. The location was known, but not publicized at all. My boss (a former SR-71 pilot) had season tickets and took me for a game v Chicago. Great game in the old Forum. We stopped for dinner & a drink at the place the Habs would gather in post-game. Roy was there, Chelly, etc... The folks were very protective of the players, allowing them space to decompress and eat. Chelly came by because he saw us wearing US Air Force stuff, thanked us for serving, pulled up a chair and bought us a round. Listen, that guy (and really all of the Habs) were incredibly nice, humble, respectful. No one got hammered drunk, no one was snotty. He gave me crap about being from Port Huron & being a Wings fan....how ironic that he'd be a player for the Wings?!?!?!), in a very good-natured way.

I have a game program with his signature and a note thanking me for serving. One of my most-treasured autographs (and I didn't even ASK for it).

The Red Wing Organization was very excited when Chelios agreed to come to Detroit,
Mr & Mrs I didn’t think he would. Chelios was like the glue that kept teams together. Definitely a guy you want to go into battle with.

Yeah. Unfortunately it turned his life in Chicago upside down. He did the “swear on my kids” that he wouldn’t go to Detroit. Still gets booed (which is ridiculous). Was a very special team that won in ‘02. Guys who were leaders elsewhere all coming in (Robitaille, Hull, Cheli) and making it work together. Never happen again, but it was special.

The rivalry between Chicago and Detroit has always been great. Just think of all the players like Chelios that have jumped from one rival team to the next. Sometimes having the crowd boo you can give you energy. Having Chelios would be like Claude L. Coming over.

Yeah, Lemieux still has a chilling effect. Draper admitted that, even recently, he still doesn’t like talking to CL. They were on a flight together (CL is an agent now) and it was awkward. I think Lemieux reps Seider
