Assuming that you sign him at 7x9million. You then have $5.7mm in Cap Space left for this year. Brown retires after next season but you have 12 roster spots to fill with $27million. Players like Cal Petersen will get a raise as will Villarde and Kempe. Doesn't leave alot of money for any impact D Men that the Kings will need going forward....It's doable but would be tight.... |

No way. 29yrs old and wants a 7-8 year deal for reported 9-10 in a flat cap world. A fair deal would be 4 years at 6-7M/yr. Either way he is in a win now mode and most likely will stay with the Avs. The Kings may make the playoffs this year because the West is so weak but don't have the firepower to go far in the playoffs until some of our prospects get a bit more seasoning. I would however be interested in Saad if the price is and term is more reasonable. |

Unless you want to become Vancouver, don't rush your rebuild. It'll only lead to more pain. |

Why is Brown retiring next season? He’s still producing on the top line with Kopi, and I doubt that changes this year as well. And I don’t see the Kings just demoting him off the roster this season either like some fans think. I can maybe, but highly doubt it, see Brown traded at the deadline, but I don’t see him retiring after this season. Especially since he has never really been hit by injuries or even had a serious injury. |

I agree that I don’t see him wanting to retire after this season but unless he comes back at a minimum cap hit, I don’t see it. Kings aren’t going to give him even 2-3 million just because he is a legacy. He’ll have to accept Spezza type money. Also, he won’t be on the top line anymore. At least he shouldn’t be. While he was good at the beginning of last year, his play definitely tapered of as the season progressed. I love Brownie and think he should retire a King, just not sure how much longer that run lasts.
As for Landeskog… he’d look mighty fine in a Kings uni and would certainly help the young guns develop. If we could land him I think it would be huge for the team, despite what some of you all think. While I wouldn’t give him 7 years, 4 years at 9 would be reasonable. Not likely, but him, Kopi, and Arvi on the top line would be nasty. |

For $9-10M a year, definitely not. If they can keep the AAV under $8M, then it might be worth looking into. |

Whew -- so much to consider with this one -- like selecting the right dressing for your salad.
The only way this makes sense is if either:
1) The Kings get him on a short term with a higher cap hit (2-3 years at 8m?). This gives the kings prospects time to develop, and also helps build a great culture -- Landeskog is a true pro. The Kings can also trade him in his last year to a cup contender and get some assets. He can help us contend in the short term, allow time for player development and return us good assets in medium term.
2) The Kings get him on a lower cap hit for the long term. (5-7 years at 6m?). He's a player that can help stabilize the team moving forward, while also adding a solid offensive punch -- at the worst, he's a 20g man. I'd pay him 6m for 20g for the next 7 hears while he stabilizes the 2nd line LW and teaches Byfield/Turcotte how to play hockey.
Also, about Brown... That's really up in the air -- but best case scenario, he signs with the Kings with a lower Cap Hit for a few years and ends up retiring with the Kings. I'd give him 4m x 2 years and then give him a 1 year deal after that until he is ready to retire. He is still scoring goals. And he's still a leader.
He's earned it. |

Can you imagine being a rookie center playing your first year between Landeskog and Brown. It's like having two coaches on your wings -- talk about pressure to develop. I can't imagine a better way to teach a center how to play hockey the right way.
You cheat on one play up the ice, and come back to the bench to sit between those two. They both look at you. You realize you need to do a better job.
Rinse. Repeat. |

Arizona making some suspect moves. Time to move in and get jakob chychrun.
And a hard pass on Landy. Great guy and player. But unless its him at 6.5. That contract will likely get bad fast. Hes not a 70 pt player. Sure he is when Rantanen and MacKinnen are there. |

I think the team should give him a nice sendoff this year and he should find success and happiness somewhere else. He was overpaid for the majority of this last contract, with a few highlight years in 17/18 and 18/19 where his production justified the AAV. During the rest of those years, he failed to top 40 points (granted he probably would have toped 40 in 19/20 and maybe a full season in 20/21). Good player for part of his career here, key contributor on the playoff runs, and he will always be remembered as the captain of two Cup teams. But time to move on from him.

That's pretty much it. He got his money, well-played, and now it is time to move on. |

Completely agree with this.
Spot on that Landy would be good at the right price -- which I suppose is the argument you could use for any available player...
I'm especially excited about the Kings picking up a young impact D to play a role in the long term. There are a couple out there via trade (as rumors report). If the Kings can flip Turcotte + 1st Round Pick for Chychrun or Sergachev or S. Jones or some other similar D -- that'd be a big step forward in getting the Kings a seat at the Tea Party.

As far as Brown goes -- I'm not necessarily on the "Send-Him-On-His-Way" train like others seem to be. Obviously he's not a 6m a year player, but he is still producing and you have to imagine he's still a strong voice in the locker room (although we really have no idea about that).
The Kings are also pretty short on bonafide RW players. If we can sign Brown to a 4 year deal that looks likes:
4m
3m
2m
1m
With an average cap hit of 2m -- I think that'd be a huge win for the Kings; he is at worst a solid 3rd line winger.
If he wants more money -- then yeah -- you'd have to move on from him. But if they can find a nice contract for him, I think he'd like to finish his career in L.A.
(Why Do I think think that You Ask? A Cat told me -- obviously.) |

Stop using Wonderland Math. That'd be a 2.5m cap hit. If you are going to take the time to write posts on this blog -- at least take the time to make them accurate.

He was still our leading goal scorer. He likely gets a depth deal after this contract. I just dont see Brown going anywhere else. |

It's really just a question of what Brown wants to do. You look at players like Spezza and Perry who are winding down their career (not that Brown is quite there yet), they get to decide where they play -- if Brown wants to stick around on a team friendly contract -- Rob "MissTheNet" Blake will absolutely accommodate that. If Brown wants to move on -- he'll be able to find a landing spot that suits him.
As Fans -- we should hope that Brown wants to stay with the Kings (he's already won his Cups -- and he's already made his money).
Captain of the first ever Kings Stanley Cup. "Move On From Him" just doesn't feel like the right phrase we should be using.
Maybe we all just move down one seat -- and Brown get's a half cup a tea.
Win -- Win. |

I disagree. I don't care that his numbers were not great 3 or 4 years ago. What I care about what is is doing today and in the immediate future. This year he was scoring at an over 20 goal pace. After his contract next year the Kings should then offer him 1 year at $700k to $900k similar to what Thornton, Spezza and Simmons signed for last year. Assuming there is still room on the team for a guy who can punch in 10-20 goals. |
