It isn't that they have a bad roster. They have a lot of solid pieces. This team lost its identity when they let Pavelski walk. Traded away heart and soul players and bet way too much money on Evander Kane and a broken Karlsson. Now they are in a position where they have too many un-tradable contracts.

I guess they couldn’t afford Pavelski with all the other bad contracts. Joe scored 38 in his last season with SJ. The talk in Sharks land was how slow Joe was.
Production wise Burns has suffered the most since Joe’s departure. His point totals have cratered by not benefiting from all those deflection goals by Pavelski.
Couture was supposed to take the leadership reins but injuries and lesser leadership ability than Pavelski and Thornton did that in.
