Hains: All Quiet on the Northern Front
48 hours after the Hurricanes signed Kotkaniemi to an offer sheet, the Montreal Canadiens have yet to make any announcement about the situation, unlike what the Canes had done a couple of years ago when the roles were reversed.

MB is examining all of his options. Such as acquiring Shaw and Strome from the Hawks.
Shaw would give the habs an additional 3.9M in LTIR cap space if they decide to match. Strome would be a center to replace KK if MB is not going to match.

yeah, make an even worst mistake to fix the first one. brillant.
From my perspective the only things that should matter are whether Kotkaniemi really wants out of Montreal, whether he signed because he'd be stupid not to take that money or whether it's both. If he wants out, sadly I think the Habs need to eat a poopty return and move on

i obviously don't watch him like you do. do you think he is worth the risk of matching and ending up paying him that much? i've been thinking all along they're just going to have to let him go but then i see people wondering what they should do, so it must not be as cut and dry as i was thinking?

Like I said, depends if he wants to be here. If he does, then I think you match just to not be pushed around but the contract sucks. If he doesn't, you let him go and you take the poopty return. Either way the options aren't good

If i'm Bergevin right now I'm out there shopping those Carolina picks to see what kind of center I can get.
If I can line something up for an affordable, reasonably young guy capable of 40~ points, I let KK walk and pull the trigger.
Bergevin probably matches though, just to save face. - BINGO!
Again, some mediocre center plug into the middle 6 is not going to make or break the Habs season.
If the Habs are taking the picks, use them wisely, get talent and go full rebuild. They should be doing that, regardless if KK is part of the team or not.
Anything else should be the defacto end of MB sooner than later.

there ya go.
You gain a probably similarly effective offensive player that won't (frank) up your cap structure and another first round pick to try and replace KK. - BINGO!
hawks can even send shaw to give the habs additional LTIR cap space to sign some one else, if needed.
strome is only signed for one year at 3M. So no long term cap implications, either.
we will just not mention that strome is the worst skater in the league and pretty useless on 75% of the ice but below the dots is pretty good.

That wouldn't be saving face, that would be the nail in the coffin. If KK isn't open to signing a reduced AAV extension in Mtl, like it is rumored he will in Carolina, MB better just take the picks and move on. If he matches just to keep him for a year before having to qualify him at 6 again, ouch.
