CHOLO GONNA GO LOW!
He is going to have a tough time getting any ice time in Seattle with 8 better defenders than him there. The $900K salary may just hinder him be a waiver pick-up once he is sent down though.

He's got a tough row to hoe. The Krack ain't the knights, but the D-line is pretty stout. I'd think they took him as a project with lots of up-side, and could fill in a pinch whilst re-establishing himself.

I hope he does well, good kid, needs to re-set his mind. Unfortunately, the NHL is a dog-eat-dog world, and he's wearing Milk Bine underwear (credit: Cliff Clavin, Mailman extraordinaire)

I think "lots of upside" is a big stretch. I hesitate to even call him a "project," because that implies that there's some expectation that with some work he could be a solid NHLer. Personally I think that ship has sailed. He's 23, five years removed from his draft, four years removed from his first NHL contract, and despite getting a verrrrrry long look at the NHL level (somehow he's played 104 NHL games) he can't stick at the top level even on one of the NHL's worst teams and a blueline that's absolutely starved for offense.

Right now Cholowski is depth, plain and simple. There are a minimum of 8 defenders ahead of him on one-way contracts. He's not even a lock for No. 9, as he'll be competing for injury replacement callup duty with the likes of Carrick, Olofsson, and (Cale) Fleury.

At this point if he ever progresses past "part-time third pairing D" I would call that a nice surprise. Stranger things have happened, but they don't happen often.

He definitely has had struggles....I guess I'd like to think that with some time in a different environment, with different mentors, he'll grow into a serviceable D-man. By no means do I think he'll be a Top4 kinda guy. And, truly, I think the Krack is his last chance. But maybe, knowing this is really it for him and his back's against the wall, he'll finally become something more than an enigma.

The reality is, most teams are hoping for one legit NHL player to come out of each draft and Detroit got theirs in 2016. Over the past 10 drafts, so far they have 5 draft picks remaining on their roster so they way behind. We think they've made progress over the last few, but we really don't know yet. I do think the 2022 & 2023 drafts may be what gets them over the hump. If they can get a top 3 in one of them, and perhaps a top 5 in the other, they should have a couple of star players surrounded by some really good players. At least that's what I'm hoping for. It would be nice to see them get Wright or Miroshnichenko, and either Bedard or Michkov in 2023 which could potentially give them a super star.

Hey Jeremy, completely different topic. Just wondering if you had any thoughts on a blog about some of next years free agents and the possibilities of Stevie taking a shot at them. Just with the teams current cap space and lack of long term contracts, I could see possibly a significant signing if the opportunity presented itself. Not a lot of big names that fit with our future aspirations, but Barkov, Zibanejad, and Forsberg could be intriguing. Mostly I love the idea of Barkov, always have liked this guys game, and only turning 27 next September, I can see him fitting our plans the most. Just my thoughts and opinions.

For sure, it will definitely come about. I have to think Barkov will be extended, but if not I’d take him in a heartbeat. Will definitely be looking at upcoming free agents at some point. Thanks for that!
