Carol Schram: Boeser returns but Canucks come out flat in 5-2 loss to the Sabres Brock Boeser returned after missing three games with an injury, but Quinn Hughes missed Tuesday's game and the Canucks suffered their worst defeat of the year to date in a 5-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

Of course the overall Canucks D system is hot garbage. Everyone would look better if that got fixed.

However, the conversation is about Myers defending what's unfolding in front of him – not who caused what to happen. Sure, the team would be a lot better if they didn't have breakdowns that caused odd man rushes, or had a better system in place to cover better defensively. Sure, Myers isn't responsible for starting the play/breakdown. But this is about how Myers is as a defender (as you stated he was a good defender), and unfortunately for the team and himself when things break down he doesn't make the break downs better. As RC said, he's not aware and not sharp – he's very reactionary, which for 6 mil in a top 4 role is pretty terrible.

You said the two Canucks were "standing still" at the line, but (#26?) you can clearly see angling from the boards to the center of the ice to take away the pass, and whoever the other guy is maybe 1/2 step behind the Sabres player. Myers stays upright, gets his stick/body on Okposo, and either forces him to beat him or go wide and try to make that pass. Either of those plays is a lot less dangerous than walking in and taking a shot from the faceoff dot.

On goal 2, Myers did nothing wrong. There are 5 other players on the ice (Inc Demko) to blame before him on that one.
On goal 1, Myers going down to block a pass is weird, but Demko was in a bad position and had perfect view of the shooter, he should've had that.

Again, this isn't about "are these goal Tyler Myers' sole fault?" Because they're not – the team D is trash. It's about if Tyler Myers is actually a good defender. Sure, Demko could/should have had that, sure the turnover caused the whole play... but in that play, was Tyler Myers playing good defense? No. He wasn't: he was star fishing to prevent a pass to no one. That's the point. In the second one, was he playing good defense? No, he should have recognized the situation and adjusted properly, which meant taking the lone man to his left (there was absolutely nothing to his right to defend against) as he was the threat.

Even if those shots don't go in, it's bad individual defense.

it was just a bad team game but not all that surprising to be honest.

a long roadtrip is starting to drag and mental/physical fatigue is playing an effect. even though it's the start of the season let's remember that it's been a while since they've been in the grind so they're working their way to peak game shape. a trip to the other side of the continent compounds the factors.

also, the horrible play got worse as the game went on which i think shows my first part. it's the mental fatigue that led to worsening play.

ultimately, i think the coaching is as deficient as the players (if not more) in this game (/season.)

lastly, i'd venture to say that we all agree that (team) defense is the achilles heal of this team. this game does not necessarily reflect this team but this was exactly what we feared. again, i'm putting this more on coaching than players. they better sort this out.

Just saw this posted for canucks practice

Lines for the #Canucks at Wednesday practice in Chicago

Pearson-Horvat-Garland
Höglander-Pettersson-Boeser
Dowling-Miller-Podkolzin
Lammikko-Richardinson-Highmore

OEL-Poolman
Hunt-Myers
Rathbone-Schenn

Extras: Chiasson, Burroughs

So the canucks get outplayed for the first 50 minutes, green reunites the Lotto line and they immediately generate scoring chances, then the very next practice he goes back to the same lines that got beat by Buffalo?

Given the way the Canucks seem to play well against the good teams and poorly against the bad teams these last few seasons, I expect them to help Chicago break out of their slump tomorrow

Hughes will hopefully be good to go and they can get Hunt out of there, he was a disaster.

Maybe Green is trying a different system because they didn't learn the last one.....or maybe they did.

Same lines as what the club iced at the start of Tuesday night's game.
This probably isn't what Green is really looking at for Thursday. Based on the pace of the work, seems this is just a working day. #Canucks

Apparently there was a lot of hard skating and drills with punishments for the losing side. More of an ass kicking day than a line setting day (hopefully)

Hopefully he just lined them up and took slappers at them – anyone who flinched had to skate laps

Maybe that's what OJ was doing at the end of the bag skate... Shot blocking drill. He was just that much fitter than everyone else. Starting the shot blocking drill when others were sucking air.

That was clearly the 1 on 1 defending drill.

Ya the Philly game and last nights game should have been closed out in regulation.

Once this club learns how to close out games in regulation...look out lol

You hate to over react and make rash moves but there is a history of years showing how this is more than likely going to turn out.

I would be looking at Montreal who seem to be in panic mode also and look at making a move to help fix the D . They need a center and we need a Dman
