Excellent goalie. Meant a lot to the Preds over the years and retiring his number is fine. But he will not come close to the HOF. |

Really good goalie, really good person, really important to that organization, not a HOF level goalie. |

Rinne never winning a Cup is a big impediment. His career save % at .917 is stellar, tying him with Price, Gibson, Bobrovsky but not elite.

I absolutely love the guy, but even I've always said Pekka is the perfect example for why it's called the Hall of Fame, and not the Hall of the Really Good. He was just never dominate enough for a long enough stretch of time, and didn't always show up for the biggest games. Definitely deserves to have this number retired for what he's meant to the Preds both on and off the ice. He was basically the unofficial team captain since Weber was shipped to Montreal, and overall just a genuinely terrific human being. |

Personally I do not think NUMBERS should be retired unless they are a HOCKEY GOD eligible and there playing deeds travel thru hockey lore and time...
examples Gretzky, Howe, Orr, Hull, Lemieux
a number defines a GOAT identity even when number seen by itself ... it is a subliminal connection no matter the team that player is on everyone knows that number and who owns it
that being said...
Rinne was a great NHL goalie big deal for the Press but not HOF...I understand why teams do this to show respect and Rinne deserved that for what he has done for the organization. |

eventually the same question will arise for Rick Nash.....to which I do not approve of his jersey retirement - Alexzanki
Throwing around "future hall of famer" seems to be the new "generational player" |

I agree Ek. Maybe you can reach out to the HoF selection committee and lobby those members. David Poile is on there and you said you know him pretty well. Brian Burke is a reader. Bobby Clarke. Bob McKenzie is a source. Try to make it happen. I love Rinne. Osgood deserves a look. Sorkin too. |

Good goalie, not a HOFer. Corey Crawford was better.
I may have missed it in your post, what year did Nashville win the Stanley Cup? |

Rinne has stats more comparable to Carey Price, probably the best active comparable. I’m sure there will be a lot of HOF clamour for Price because he plays in Montreal. 100 plus more wins then Crawford. Not having won a Cup hurts Rinne and Price for sure. A lot of non HOF goalies have won Cups so should not be the disqualifying criteria. Would be a lot more HOF talk had he not been in Nashville but we are used to being under the Radar here. |

Man. Guy has a hell of a career, will be the first banner raised for the franchise, was probably the most loved player by the fan base, and fit right in with the community; yet, he’s immediately trivialized by the posters around here.
Isn’t the internet great?
It’s a shame he never accomplished as much as the all stars who patrol this place. Boy was he a loser. Whew. |

I don’t see people trivializing Rinne. The consensus seems to be that he was a very good goalie and a better person but not a Hall of Famer.

Price made lottery teams qualify/almost qualify for the playoffs throughout his career. Rinne and Price are not the same.
Price getting into the Hall of Fame (which he will), will have no correlation to him playing in the city of Montreal. Likewise, Rinne will not miss making it in because he played in Nashville. |

Not everyone is, that’s for sure.
But there are a few who stick out |

Retiring numbers became a joke after our self absorbed commissioner demanded that every team hang Gretzky's jersey. A ring of honor would certainly suffice because of course eventually you will run out of numbers and have to start over. |

Remember Yvon Labre has his #7 retired. Who you ask? |
