Carol Schram: OEL, Hamonic sidelined; Canucks look for 3rd-straight win, hire Rutherford
Three games into the Bruce Boudreau era, the Vancouver Canucks will be without two of their top defensemen when they face the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night. Thursday, the club announced the hiring of Jim Rutherford as its new president and interim general manager. Front-office changes are already underway.
Thanks Carol - the winds of change are blowing in Van City and people should be dancing in the streets…at least imo.
Francesco Aquilini and the Aquilini family seem to have come to the conclusion that they once again require a traditional management setup in the organization. Rutherford as President, a General Manager and an experienced coach bring this long suffering Canuck fan hope!!
When you first hear of the news of Gear and Wall you think Wow.
Canucks analytics (Wall ) have been non existent and Gear has helped negotiate contracts of Lui Sven Sutter Myers and so on. Maybe ownership said enough already. Clean house .

Big void in Canucks org with news that assistant GM Chris Gear and director of hockey ops Jonathan Wall have been relieved of duties. Gear is a 12 year employee, Wall 20+ yrs. Hard to believe these are Jim Rutherford’s decisions. He hasn’t even met staff.

Just my opinion, which is pretty much worthless, but perhaps internally the ownership group understands there’s systemic issues that need to be addressed and large scale changes are needed to right the ship?

Does it matter at this point? They're clearly restructuring the organization from something that wasn't working at all. - Load Management
Exactly!! Eight years of bad to mediocre hockey, 51 years if we’re being honest, obviously doing the same things over and over again with the same people expecting different results does not lead to success.
I think it does. If Aquilini is still meddling nothing has changed - CanuckDon
JR probably has his own people that he wants to bring on board. He is suppose to be into analytics and Canucks weren't so change had to happen. Canucks player contracts over the last few years speak for themselves. As soon as the ink was drying we were looking for ways to move that player.

I want everyone fired. But I still fear that Aquilini will continue to run w one of the leanest front offices in the league. If they fire 6 people they need to bring in 10. So far we have brought in 3.

I think you're missing the point here. At this juncture it doesn't matter who does the firing. It's who does the hiring that counts. I think it's pretty clear Rutherford comes here with autonomy or he doesn't take the job.

Didn’t Rutherford tell the Penguins to go fly a kite when they overruled him on a hockey decision? I’d say he wants to run his own show and the Aquilini’s are letting him.
