Carol Schram: Game on? Schenn, Lammikko in Covid protocol ahead of Tuesday's game Riding a four-game winning streak, the Vancouver Canucks got a burst of bad news on Tuesday, cancelling their morning skate after receiving word that Luke Schenn and Juho Lammikko had tested positive for Covid-19.

Thanks Carol

I've already seen the sentiment on Twitter that the league needs to shut it down again given the recent cases, but I don't agree. With the way restrictions have gone in a lot of places and the data showing community spread being the cause the majority of the time, shutting down NHL games wouldn't stop players from getting infected.

I guess we just have to hope that the Canucks caught it early enough and the majority of the team can stay healthy.

I don't have a problem with being out shout by 3 or 4 against a team like Carolina Boston and Winnipeg. Their defensive game looks much better.

People complaining that the league needs to shut down should shut the (frank) up and join the other protesters at the art gallery. Covid will be with us for decades: it’s the new normal, deal with it or stay home! Nice to see the new strain has the symptoms of a common cold. I’ll be at the game tonight if they don’t cancel, should be a good one !

I've added a couple of notes to the blog since it first published.

Most importantly - Carolina's game tonight is now postponed, after 4 more of their players tested positive.

Rutherford set to speak to the media at 12:30. Will be interesting to see whether he has more testing news...and the tone of his messaging!

Yeah, I see this constant coverage of covid a little redundant. This is the new norm and it’s here to stay like influenza A or influenza B. Get your vaccine, keep up with boosters, wash your hands regularly, wear a mask and let’s get back to living.

I agree to an extent but it is also important for people to stay up to date with the mutations as they have proven to be more infectious/dangerous than the standard virus.

True, but isolation ain’t working. There are just too many people not willing to participate. Because of that, IMO, isolation is not a sound strategy to eliminate or at minimum control the virus.

So, what’s the alternative? We need to adjust our systems to deal with it. That’s going to take an incredible amount of time, money, and energy to accomplish. Basically an entire rethink of our healthcare system.

Not just that, but keeping up to date with when and where outbreaks are happening can help prevent exposure.

Rutherford said they're expecting the latest test results back around 6 p.m.

As of now, they're prepared to go ahead with the game. He's not sure how many positive tests would warrant cancellation.

He emphasized that the players and organization do not want to go through what happened last year again. Said that players weren't comfortable practicing this morning, that's why they decided to cancel.

Maybe it's time our officials actually started admitting that vaccination isn't curbing transmission as much as they expected. Too many of the vaccinated believe they couldn't possibly be responsible for helping the spread.

I don't blame them. I can't see Columbus being comfortable taking the ice tonight either. Carolina added another 3 players today. So clearly the Canucks have been exposed.

They should have nothing to worry about, because Bill Daley said

"...for the most part, players had been contracting the virus through community spread, rather than outbreaks with teams. They can tell by looking at the strains of the virus that have infected the players."

If you believe that line of horsepoop.

Vaccinations were never about eliminating transmission. It was purely about limiting the severity of the condition so the infected didn’t take up too many hospital beds. Vaccines help reduce severity, that’s an indisputable fact.

Our healthcare system is in trouble. It can’t deal with the case load before covid. A severe enough pandemic would absolutely cripple it. When experts talked about flattening the curve, it wasn’t about infection rates, it was about hospitalizations.

So we as a society will have to come up with a way to deal with viral outbreaks going forward. Like the old days we are just going to have sanatoriums to separate the infected from our acute hospitals.
