Good stuff. Pretty much the best player the Flames could realistically get, besides Gio who didn’t make a lot of sense.

Late first in a terrible draft by all accounts...and the player is signed to a great deal for multiple years still

Previous comment bang on, except about it being a terrible draft. The reason this deal is an all out win for Calgary is the term left on Toffoli's contract. What on earth is Kent Hughes thinking...

It's a pretty steep price. Heinemen is a good enough prospect that it shouldn't have taken a first, but hey, they got him a month early.

The term might also suck. He's been bad this year, but hopefully that's just being on a crappy team.

Seems like everything I read says this draft and next are both supposed to be very good. Not just top 5 either. Like a good couple draft years coming up.

It’s a late first, they took Pitlicks contract back so basically it’s a 2.4 mil cap hit which allows them to add another player. No one knows how good Hiemy is going to be until he comes to North America and plays. Just glad we didn’t give up a high end prospect as well.

Another aspect of this trade is it sends out part of the Bennett trade. Which is a win for Tre. If Heinemen is a fringe NHL and that second is a bust, that would make the trade look worse.

He had like the best point stats on the team, how is that being bad? As a team, MTL is bad, sure. This is a great deal for the Flames, IMO, because of the term left on it. If he was just a rental, it would have been an overpay.

LATE first round picks are the most overrated thing in the NHL.

trade them any chance you get.

Good trade for both teams, but the win probably goes to Hughes and the Canadiens. This one is going to hurt down the road.

Heineman is going to be a very solid NHL player. He has nine points in his last ten SHL games including six goals.

Edit: Apparently Elite Prospects has their “last 5/10 production category wrong. He has four points in his last ten.

Roll the dice on the picks, it always makes the 'who won the trade' decision impossible. IF Heinemann turns into a bona fide NHL'r, maybe.

This team is looking at the next two months and Tofolli checks a lot of the boxes on the wish list to upgrade the roster. Giving up a first, even a late first, is always tough but the team is better now than it was yesterday.

I think this was a good move for the Flames. Needed help on the right side and picks and prospects are never a guarantee. Toffoli has a knack for scoring, which you can never have enough of.

2 years left beyond this year at $4.25 is also a nice price for what he can bring to a team. Not to mention Looch was a groomsmen at Toffoli's wedding, so it's also a solid team culture move.

Toffoli has to have more upside than James Neal ever showed, right? Right?

Ummm...
James Neal is a Canadian professional ice hockey winger who currently plays for the Springfield Thunderbirds in the American Hockey League while under contract to the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League.

Totally agree, the Flames are better today than yesterday. Treliving s getting Sutter the guys he wants, you can bet he was all over this. I look forward th the Jackets game to see where he fits in.

Maybe as an Oiler. What he brings to the team as far as leadership and toughness, is what you need to win. 9 goals so far on pace for 15-16 able to move up when needed. Great trade for the Flames take that any day over minor leaguer Neal who is still using cap for the Oilers.
Holland’s a genius!
