You just never know how GMs will value assets. It’s obviously helpful to have a lot of assets since that increases the probability you’ll have something a GM will value, but there’s just always a chance someone out there values something we have or doesn’t value something we want and is willing to give it away for what seems like free for us. I’m pretty skeptical we have the horses to bring in a 2nd line RW, but you just never know and I think if there’s a trade to be made we will make it just like we did with Carter last year.

I keep thinking about what type of guy Hextall, Burke and Sully can agree on and Nick Paul keeps popping up in my mind. 200ft player with size speed and aggressive play. He isn't the scoring winger we should trade for, but a guy like him just seems like something they would be able to add and be interested in adding.

"13. Nick Paul
Center / Left Wing, Ottawa Senators
Age: 26
Contract: Pending UFA, $1.35 million AAV
📉 Last Rank: 11th
Scoop: The preference of the Ottawa Senators is to keep Paul. Full stop. That much is clear; they value his contribution, his work ethic, his compete level. They’ve made what they believe are fair offers to extend him, including a three-year, $6 million ($2 million per) proposal that did not gain traction. This much is also clear: Given where the Senators are, they can’t afford to watch Paul walk for nothing. So if push comes to shove over the next few weeks, keep an eye on Paul as a player with real value for Ottawa to cash in on on the trade market."

He would be a good replacement for ZAR IMO.

That's what I am looking at. He can be 3rd liner while Zucker continues to rehab, then move down with Teddy and McGinn once Zuck returns. ZAR inability to score is not cutting it anymore.

Money is obviously the issue though. He turned down $2M a year, so I'm not sure what he wants moving forward, but at least as a rental he could be a good get.

Seems like a Geno LW with a good RW shooter. Geno's best seasons have always been with a power forward/go to the net guy and then a pure sniper. (Malone/Sykora)

“Got out of the Tanev contract”. Haha. Or you could figured out a way to lose two scoring depth wingers instead of 1 the expansion draft. Scoring depth would be nice. I guess you just have to pay for it.

You need Nemestikov on Malkin's wing. Two Russians that will invade the oppositions nets with flying pucks!

This whole “Rutherford will take all the pens bad players” narrative is quite baffling. It’s a little silly too when you think that Rutherfirds fingerprints are all over the last two championship seasons the Pens have had. Much more so than Sullivan, who is basically a cheerleader.

Dude, Rutherford brought in Hornqvist, Kessel, Bonino, Cullen, Daley, Hags etc..he had a huge fingerprint on those back to back teams.

Would have been nice if they left Zucker exposed in that draft, problem is is that Francis probably wouldn't have taken him.

Could have left Malkin and Carter exposed. Malkin could have stated publicly he won’t go to Seattle, Carter could tell them if selected he would retire and you lose ZAR. Then you could at least Trade Tanev(although I wouldn’t).

I don’t think it’s right either. I think Rutherford falls out of love with players just as fast as he falls in love with them and just because he fixated on Zucker and Kapanen a few years ago doesn’t mean he’ll fixate on them now. I’m kinda hopeful that maybe he still has a high opinion of Kapanen since he was scoring when Rutherford was still here, but I don’t see why he’d give a poop about Zucker. All of his first hand experience with Zucker has been pretty subpar.

Rutherford isn’t a Chiarelli situation. I think he’s prone to acquiring the odd legitimately bad player (Jack Johnson), but for the most part the majority of the guys he brought in were good hockey players relative to the role they were expected to play. The issue was that in his last couple of years most of them were overpaid for or never found their footing. I don’t think Rutherfords the type of guy you can straight up fleece with a terrible player, but I do think you can take advantage of him if he fixates on one of your decent players and I’m not sure we have that unless we’re starting to seriously talk about moving Dumoulin.

Geno's contract doesn't allow for that, now Carter they may have been able to swing that. Me personally if I was the player with the NMC, I would not waive it and gamble going to that poop hole team.

He would be an offseason move though because of his injury and cap status.
