I keep hearing great things about this Erik Tulsky guy in Carolina. He is the assistant GM there. Apparently he’s been the main architect of that team. The Jets should definitely go out and get him if he’s available.
Its crazy to think that Carolina lost their number 1 defenseman last year through free agency and they have not skipped a beat. Here in Winnipeg, we lost Byfuglien 3 years ago and for the most part most the organization still has not recovered. |

In fairness, Carolina replace Hamilton with DeAngelo for 900k and Ethan Bear for a depth forward. That makes up for the offense lost with TDA and the defending with Bear. Plus, they save $7m

So essentially you are agreeing with me that the Carolina management did some proactive work in filling some holes as soon as they were exposed. That’s something good management does! |

Oh 100%. The Jets did not make an attempt to replace Byfuglien. Nobody is like Byfuglien, as he is incredibly unique. But no big body, two way star like Buff.

What do you mean, they replaced Byfuglien with DeMelo. |

I agree there is no coach that can make the Jets roster into a top contender.
Also I got to say you are way to easy on the Jets defense. They are as big a problem for the Jets scoring woes as the bottom 6 forwards.
Morrissey has 5 5v5 goals the rest of the defense has 6 for a total of 11. Most of the top teams in the league are at least 25 goals plus.

As long as Chevy's around, the team's success is 100% up to the scouts. If they get lucky in the draft and get a haul, the team improves. If they draft some busts, the team sinks. Chevy will not fill holes. Ever. The Jets have had the pieces to fill holes, the core to make a run, but no willingness from management do take the next step, or even do anything at all.
That said, the team is a licence to print money, and fans will throw money at them win or lose, so why change what works from a business perspective? Jets are pretty much the Tim Hortons of hockey. Why try when customers will throw money at you no matter what you do? |

Once again this team was out shot and left Comrie alone to try and salvage a win by himself. I sure hope that Chevy fires the entire coaching staff the day after the season and hires someone outside the organization. The Jets need a strong coach like Quennville, who has served his penalty for what happened 12 years ago. Then trade the deadwood and sign some decent top end players who know how play with heart. |

We prefer a lot more playoff series wins over the past 5 years. But hey, see you on the sidelines in a few weeks leaf fan. We’ll have the tee time ready for ya. |

Well this team has struggled to score at even strength for years now, its hardly just a problem for the dmen.
This team doesn't have a Josi, Makar or Hedman, gotta make do with what you got and find other ways to have an advantage over the competition.
Morrissey, Schmidt and Pionk are all over the 30 point mark and Dillon has 19 points so that's not too bad and two of the Jets top 4 dmen for most of the season in Dillon and DeMelo have had season highs of 6 and 4 goals in the past, were we really thinking two defense first type dmen would be scoring many goals, neither of these guys were ever considered offensive defensemen.
I see the fact that the Jets most productive bottom six player having the same amount of even strength points as Stanley(who's played 18 less games) and only one more even strength point than DeMelo(who's played 3 less games) as a WAY bigger issue than lack of offense from the dmen.
Also it should be far easier and less costly in terms of cap space and acquisition cost to get better and more productive bottom six players than it would be to acquire offensive dmen. |

Yeah I think you overrate other teams forward scoring ability.
Lets say you want to turn the Jets into a top 10 even strength scoring team. How do you do that? Based on the current top 10 teams, they have scored on average 22 more goals from their defense and 24 goals from their forwards then the Jets.

Good conversation from both of you, even strength has been an issue. Arguably a better defense core would help all four forward lines but the reverse is also true. Are our top six keeping up with the top six of the best 5v5 teams or is 5v5 an issue that extends beyond the 3rd and 4th lines?
I don’t think we can measure much from a year like this one. So much inconsistency. Clean house, fix leadership, hire a coaching staff, learn the new system and then let’s re-evaluate our talent.

Yeah I don't think I do, just a quick perusal of team stats and the Jets bottom two lines are extremely unproductive compared to better teams and even pretty bad compared to some weaker teams.
The Avs who the Jets are playing right now claimed Aube-Kubel off waivers from Philly and he has 11G/10A in 9:42 of ice time, all at even strength, that's more than any Jet 3rd or 4th liner in less ice time then some of them.
If that's your benchmark then ya gotta improve overall obviously and that includes the defense but improving the bottom two lines would make a huge difference. Gotta identify guys who can contribute from those roles and acquire them, maybe some of the guys the Jets could be those guys Idk but none of them have really shown that to this point, Harkins and Svech both seem like guys who could put up some points if put with guys that aren't dead weight.
I don't disagree that some more offense from the D would help but again acquiring offensive dmen is gonna cost quite a bit more than getting better 3rd and 4th liners should.
Also, around here if you suggest upgrading on DeMelo you get yelled at and told he's one of the best defensive dmen in the league so what are ya gonna do when the defense is great already?!.. 😉 |

This is all in fun,
Not a great game for Ultimate tonight.
He’s been here talking about how we can’t score without 55, which is surprising cause we score the same with or without him.
But tonight,
When all of a sudden it’s not Shief head to head against macKinnon, and it’s lowry. We out shoot, out play and beat the Avs.
Way to go Lowry, nice game!!
Also, the only Avs goal game on yet another head a scratching play from Stan.
Ultimate couldn’t have liked this one.

I was at the game and had a great time. I have gone to many games and believe it or not that was the first time I had a Jets dog. It practically put me in coma. Other than that, Lowry did look noticeable at the game. If he did that every 82 games when they were meaningful and not just once every 34 or so, I might actually be a fan of his.
Too bad Rantanen and Landeskog, Mackinnon’s usual linemates were being rested/injured. It seemed like Mackinnon was playing on a couple of lines. Also Kadri just coming back from injury did not look very good either.
This was the first game without Mark Scheifele that this team scored 3 goals plus on an above 500 team.
Just some Ultimate thoughts……

Watching Ehlers is a treat! I was thinking about how underutilizes he is and thought it would be fun to compare him to Laine.
This season:
Patrik Laine:
56gp 26g 30a 56points. He averages 18:50/game.
Nikolaj Ehlers:
59gp 27g 25a 52points. He averages 18:10/game.
Imagine if Ehlers was given the same amount of PP time as Laine, his stats surely would have been greater. People on this board have claimed that Laine was “generational” and said that he for sure would score 50. I am thinking that if that truly is the case, than Ehlers too should be a “shoe-in” for 50. I think Ehlers with a full season on Scheifele’s wing and getting ample power play time scores 50. Hopefully the new coach can see that! |

i think Ehlers could score 50 as well in this scenario, needs to stay healthy all year as well though

Let’s make this a mailbag question.
Jacob could you help us out with this question? I would be curious to see what offense is like with Scheifele as opposed to what it is like without Scheifele. Please do include opposition as well (whether they are above 500 and what not).
Thanks Jacob! |

Ultimate, just do me favor and don't exaggerate anyone's opinion of Shief.
for the record,
i like him
i'd only trade him for a great package of picks and players
i do think he is now a 2nd line center
but still excellent offensively
just dont want to read, i hate him or think lowry's better, or would trade him for anything. |

No sorry, I was asking not to exaggerate if Jacob answers your question.
You didn’t exaggerate on your previous post. |
