All of these types of calls, from the Coleman kick to this onside call come back to one crucial issue that the NHL needs to address this off-season. Whether these were the right calls or not there is a clear misunderstanding among players, coaches, refs, etc in the NHL on what is and is not allowed on any given play. Can a player direct the puck into the net with a skate and to what degree? What counts as possession of the puck? What stipulates a cross check? Hammer out the details and revamp the rule book.
Should they address it by making and sending out a video like this one which they apparently made and sent out to clearly explain it?

Maybe this is why Elliotte Friedman received several texts from video coaches in real time saying that it would not be overturned. Maybe the Oilers video coach simply needs to do a better job advising his HC.
Friedman posted several past examples of the call being made exactly the same way in an article as well:

It's not as cut and dry as you make it out to be. Even Freidman has back tracked a bit on the subject. There is a clear division of opinion on the matter but its moot point since the game is in the books.

There are multiple, documented, examples of it being called exactly the same way in the past to the degree that, if you believe Friedman, multiple video coaches predicted to him that it would not be overturned. Pretty much nothing in NHL officiating is cut and dried but as long as people keep whining about this (while saying it doesn't really matter in the game outcome) other people are going to point out that there's a very clear history of it being called the same way.

And yet I'm confident that there's an even more prolific history of those kinds of plays being called offside during play: of plays where the puck crosses the line "in possession" (but not making direct contact) that have been blown dead because that's what the rule is generally understood to encompass. Unfortunately, those don't have clear video replays saved on Youtube because they're just normal offside calls.
I've seen more evidence recently has me accepting the call as the correct one, but that doesn't negate the fact that there's very clearly some grey area present in the rules as written.
What gets me about the play is that, in the replay from the blueline camera, I seem to recall that the linesman had a clear line of sight across the ice to see that Nichushkin was offside while Makar crossed the blueline and yet didn't seem to have his hand-up signaling a delayed offside. Anyone have a video with that angle? |

Point is there is no consensus with the people that matter. It really doesnt matter in the end. You're awfully salty considering the Avalanche won. |

He started strong, dialed in. That giveaway by future 9 mil Nurse was a lazy play, then Moe took over. |

This series will be won on the back of the work of that Toews-Makar pairing. They're fully controlling every aspect of the game and have limited McDavid's ability to impact the game. Not to say the rest of the Avs aren't a great team, but that pairing is the biggest factor. |

The Oilers have been horrible. They have know clue how to compete with the Avalanche. Mike Smith has been terrible and the Oilers look like they are ready to go golfing. I'd love to see a work ethic that would make Oilers fans proud, but I think they've tapped out. This is a good learning experience for the Oilers. They've learned how to finally make it through a couple rounds, but now it comes down to being ready to compete for the highest prize... we're not quite there. Go Oilers! Get a consistent goalie next year and a couple shut down D-man and you never know. |

Unfortunately, the only way you're going to get a good free agent goalie in Edmonton is to overpay, and the club won't have the money to do that.
It looks like the best thing for Kane and every interested GM out there is to just sign the guy to 1 year contracts moving forward. |

It's gonna take some work. Hopefully Skinner is ready. I Hope Kane Re-signs, but that's out of our control to an extent. Time to trade JP and work on goaltending or a shut down D.
As to tonight's game...I'm tapping out. To hard to watch and not enough desire or push back. Maybe coming back to Edmonton will wake them up. |

It was a discretionary call, shouldn't be such a thing in the playoffs. |

Defense is all the difference in this series, only gonna get better too. Colorado may be Edmontons biggest hurdle to the cup for the rest of McDavids career, kinda like Caps and Pens |

And whoever rifled that shot head high with three seconds left in a 4-0 game should be taken off on a stretcher next game. |

Kind of like Kane and Nurse acting like idiots at the end? Come on man.
The score flattered the oilers. Could have been 10-0.
9.25 million man -3 and a complete disaster once again. |

No way the guy in net for the Nords is that much better than Smith or maybe even Koskinen. The Wings won a cup with Osgood, the defence is beating the Oilers right now. |
