Carol Schram: Canucks will need good health to succeed with current defense: Rutherford Speaking on Bob McCown's podcast earlier this week, Vancouver Canucks president Jim Rutherford sounded disappointed that he hasn't been able to upgrade the blue line yet, but hopeful that the current group can be successful if it remains healthy.

On Rathbone: "He deserves the opportunity to be in Vancouver this year. If he comes in and plays the way he played the American League last year and stays healthy, that's going to improve our defense."

Let's see if the handful of people who jumped on me for saying more or less what Rutherford just said about Rathbone... jump on him. Although I don't expect him to be the dominant player he was in Abby in case people try and translate what JR is saying here...

Elliot and Jeff just dropped a surprise summer edition and there were some interesting notes. Rumors about Kadri having a deal done with NYI but they’re waiting until October to announce it. That Lou has his two RFA D with new deals that they’re waiting on. Lots on Klingberg that you covered.

Probably means that NYI aren’t in on Miller at all anymore.

Also some good coverage of the Hockey Canada fiasco. As others have said, they really need to take this down to nothing and start over. Think about this, the IIHF has banned the participation of the Russian Hockey Federation from its events because of the war in Ukraine. So the government does something the world sees as heinous and hockey players suffer. In the case of Hockey Canada, it’s the actual players and the organization covering it up, and there are no sanctions or penalties. Nobody being held accountable.

“Since Hockey Canada's govt hearing resumed Wednesday, 11 more survivors have reached out to share their stories with me, including one remarkable woman who found me in Ottawa to tell me in person about her assault.
Profoundly grateful for the trust. 🙏”

Canucks should be a decent team, able to fight for anywhere from 10th-7th in the conference.

#positive thinking.

A lot of 'ifs' needed for Canucks to have a successful year, but i'm an optimist and feel it is possible.
The main concern is injuries of course, given our lack of depth.
And the Canucks are consistently one of the most injured teams it seems.

I'm hoping for the best, but planning for the worst (as usual)

A lot of these "ifs" are not exclusive to the Canucks and can (frank) it up for many of the teams they are competing against fore a playoff spot.

On Klingberg we could trade for him or wait it out. Accrued cap from LTIRetired Ferland & the probable injuries to come would fit him in.

On Miller I’ve no problem with durability or playing in pain. He too knows this so I believe the term is the biggest hang up.

I can easily see 30+ points from a full season. He’ll be a big help on breakouts on a 3rd pair role.

No surprise on Lou holding back old news I’ve already said in here. He’s well known for keeping it quiet.

More focus will be on the kids taking it to another level. All of them can realistically do that.

That is a HUGE ask for a rookie playing on the 3rd pair, unless he gets PP1 time, which he won’t unless Hughes and OEL get injured at the same time.

Edit - the bottom 9 defensemen in 2021/22 scored 36 points in 193 games.

Huge ask but expecting decent minutes albeit sheltered. Lots of F depth for scoring is where I pin this projection. Playing from behind I think he’ll move up as well. Also 30pts isn’t as high as it seems for his skill set.
