Where does Samu Tuomaala fit on his team? Doesn’t seem like he has a regular spot. Would he be best served playing in a lower level league to get top minutes and playing time?

I saw Turris retired. Always bummed we drafted JvR over him, but both ended up disappointments.

The Finnish preseason largely overlapped with the Flyers' Development Camp, so Tuomaala has only gotten into two games. His coach, former NHLer Olli Jokinen, anticipates Tuomaala breaking out into a middle six role this season but he'll have to earn it.

Nice to see Emil andrae continue to be clutch for his team. We may have a hidden gem in him. All we can do is see how he continues to progress.

And what happened to Samu Tuomaala?! When we drafted him they sold it like he was a steal at the time but he seems to have regressed pretty badly. That flyers player development curse got to him fast, eh?

Don't you think this is a little premature? He's still only 19 years old.

He looked really good at Development Camp. He has Olli Jokinen and Sami Kapanen working with him and has a good shot at a spot on Team Finland at the 2022-23 WJC. Give it the season before passing any judgments. Going from the junior levels to the pros is a big jump.

I’m not sure if I’m forgetting or just missed it, but is Adam Ginning with the Phantoms this year?

If so, what’s the expectation with him this season?

Do you think the Flyers mishandled his development last season?

No I don't Think that it is premature. I'm not giving up on him by any means but he came with some hype and unfortunately I've yet to see that hype at him. If anything he looks like, he is struggling at the moment. That's all. It's just my observation.
He may turn out to be great but up until this point i just haven't seen why there was hype about him.
I'd love to see him develop and do well! I'm not giving up on him at all. He's just been disappointing to this point, imo

Yes, he will be with the Phantoms this season. Expectation is that he earns a regular starting spot. Don't think he will be called up this season but we shall see

Those are two solid developmental players to be around!
Adjusting to the smaller American rink has got to be hard to do. I hope he pans out because he has some wheels on him that we desperately need on the ice.
Wasn't he a projecting 1st round pick his draft year? Or am I confused with someone else?
Bill knows all things hockey so you'd be the person to ask. Thanks!

Sobchuk deal.
OMG that GM was terrible.
How dare he do that.
Worst GM ever.

Reaction!

There was some buzz about him moving up to the latter part of the first round because he tore apart the U18s. But he went about where the consensus expectation was.

I said at the time it was a mistake to pass on Raty for Tuomaala and I haven’t seen anything so far to indicate otherwise.

Bill where do you see Lycksell and Sandin fitting in? I don’t see Sandin bypassing so many wingers on the depth chart to make the NHL roster. I was surprised that they extended him.

I agree!! I have no idea why they didn't pick rather! He fell in the draft and when the flyers had their pick that is exactly who I hoped we would take. I won't lie, I was disappointed when we didn't draft him and he was ours for the taking. Ahh well. Go flyers! Chuck is the man!

I'm not sure what hype you're referring to. He's a 2nd round pick. He's 19 years old. To not expect ups and downs on a development path is unrealistic. The odds are against him as a 2nd round pick to make it as an NHL player. I have no idea how a player that young, drafted where he was, can be a disappointment at this point. That is extremely premature.

Well when raty who was a clear 1st round projected pick is passed up for whatever reasons and the hype machine goes into effect simply saying he’s a 2nd round pick will make people expect more.

Right or wrong as that may be

That doesn't make any sense. There are two players in that entire draft who have played more than 10 NHL games. He's a 19 year old 2nd round pick who is a year out from his draft year.

You’re right. Makes no sense.

Raty projected to go first round

Flyers pass on him in 2nd round

Many flyers fans wanted raty there.

Hype machine about speed of the pick

Not hard to follow.

Right or wrong people will follow closely how that plays out

You can't figure out how it doesn't make sense. Once the draft is over, where a player was projected doesn't matter anymore. Who some Flyers fans wanted is irrelevant. The point is it hasn't gotten close to playing out. Not a single pro level game played. 19 years old and a year post draft. How about we let it start to play out before offering disappointment.

I'm already mildly disappointed but again, I'm not giving up on the kid by any means. I want all of our prospects to hit their ceiling and hopefully go beyond, as do most flyers fans. But until this point he just hasn't impressed at all. Just because someone is disappointed in the current progression doesn't mean they've prematurely given up. It's just an observation and a hope that he develops as he continues to grow.
But again, a personal preference, I preferred Raty and following the two prospects I still prefer Raty at this point. All that I can do now is hope that our kid develops and finds his game. I promise you that I want nothing except to see our draft picks reach full potential.
Just because I'm disappointed in his growth so far does not mean I want to give up on him, nor will I

He played 2 games as a pro last season.
