Thanks for the preview, Zach. Would be good to see Vlasic get in regularly. Good chance for a win tonight.
Caught the EDM-SEA WHL game last night. Seattle dominated, 7-0, think the Oil Kings are rebuilding this year after winning the WHL last year.
Notes on Seattle players:
Kevin Korchinski was as advertised. Showed excellent stick handling at the point on the power play. Was judicious with pinching, did it just a few times. Always looking for good outlet pass. Nice clear shorthanded that led to a 2 on 1. 1 assist, 3 shots, +3. Only mistake, almost got beat around the edge just after the initial faceoff of the second period. Was able to use his length and skating to partially recover, goalie made the save.
Scott Retzlaff, G, 2023 eligible (Wiz rank #64) - Got the shutout, not challenged too much, had a couple of good stops, also stopped a penalty shot. Seems quiet and steady in goal, does not wander, good positioning.
Gracyn Sawchyn, F/C, 2023 eligible (Wiz #176) - Sawchyn is a little reedy at 5-11, 165, but is willing to mix it up and go into the corners for the puck. Good carry, good passing, can elevate shot, saw him once or twice in the DeBrincat spot ready for a one-timer. Has an aggressive faceoff approach and won several. Playing second line right now, has 8 points in 6 games. Needs to get stronger but seems like he would be worth taking mid to late rounds.
Brayden Dube, F, 2023 eligible (not ranked) - Playing 4th line right now and did not get a lot of ice time. Did score late 3rd period with a nice shot on the power play. Is blocked a little bit because Seattle has a deep team. Probably not drafted this year, might be worth a look on a redraft later on.
Tij Iginla, F, 2024 eligible - Was the WHL first round pick for Seattle. Playing 3rd line and finding his way. Son of Jarome Iginla, does not have his Dad's
size, right now is average size, 5-10, 160. Positions well, willing to engage for the puck, goes to the front of the net. Got his first WHL goal late in the 3rd on a power play. Should improve quickly as time goes on, has another year to establish his draft status. |

Doesn’t look like Vlasic is getting in yet. Maybe not fully healthy after blocking a shot in practice?
Richardinson in for R. Johnson:

Kurashev-Richardinson-Lafferty
Khaira-Blackwell-Entwistle

Curious what Mr. D---inson can bring. That really shuffled the bottom 6 though. Thought that Kurashev-Lafferty-Entwistle line showed some promise.
The game I saw, I thought Raddysh was "just OK", no mistakes, but nothing that stood out. Wasn't watching him too closely though.

@BenPopeCST
Jason Richardinson said he played much of last season in Vancouver with a broken hand he didn't know about.
"Maybe my game wasn't where I wanted it to be, but there were also a lot of things that were just going against me.... I want to get back to what I was in Dallas."
This is worrisome. If JD is healed he might actually make the Hawks better. |

The Athletic did a nice piece on Kurashev, suggested he get a shot in the top 6. Why not, if some of those guy can’t perform then give #23 a shot. |

He does look better than last year already. Hopefully he can maintain or deal with the NHL grind better this year. |

Toronto lost Murray to injury, KD should trade Mrazek back to the Leafs for a 1st round pick. |

LOL I was thinking Stalock....
Anyone wonder if the Oil's signing of Duncan Keith to serve as Player Development Consultant puts them a bit closer to the pole position in the Kane to Oil trade?

The way you talk about this draft, I'm really hoping whoever we trade him to and Toews, we can get 2 more 1st round picks in the 23 draft.

I don’t think Kane is going anywhere. He wants to break all the Blackhawks records and he’ll be around for a few more seasons.
I don’t think the return for Kane would be as good as people think. A late first and a b-level prospect or 2nd round pick is likely. For that price the Hawks are better off keeping Kane around.
Toews will be dealt for an underwhelming return, maybe a 3rd round pick. |

I’d like to see KD get more first round picks, but it’s unlikely unless Toews or Domi have career seasons. Even then it’s unlikely.
Maybe the Hawks load up on 2nd and 3rd round picks and KD finds a way to move up in the draft. |

For my money no way he goes to the Oil |

Rockford Files
Just from observing boxscore in today's season opening game - home game vs Manitoba
5-4 OT win.
Reichel 1 G, 2 A
L Philip 2G, 1 A
Rockford: Brett Seney (who?) With a goal and star of game
Galvas, Beaudin, I Phillips on defense. No Mitchell.
Soderblom the victory. Hardman, Teply. Slavin among returning forwards. The kid from Denver, the smallish center also played. Reichel 's brother, Kristan, who has three seasons AHL experience, not particularly a scorer, and brief NHL gp with Winnipeg - I looked up his history. Lots of representation for country as a junior but looks like limited ceiling for NHL Rockford surrendered too many shots against |

Something like that. I don't recall the timetable exactly during training camp when he was felled.
I don't know if you would agree or if your hope for positive step forwards for the team's success is the same as mine
I want (not necessarily expect, but am hopeful) to see Mitchell and Roos performing well down the playoff stretch. Naturally with the rebuild we won't be gunning for a playoff spot. But a big part, a starting point for the team to compete for playoffs, has to lie with our perceived strength
That strength looks to be a defense which starts to take shape this year. Roos is a surprise; Mitchell is I feel capable; and I am hopeful that either Vlasic or Galvas steps up and playell. Regula could be part of the mix, too. Somewhat unlikely each of these kids appear in the same lineup after the trade deadline - sure, unlikely but not unfathomable. Injuries could make this lineup come to fruition. McCabe and Murphy, after all, are injury prone.
Of course we don't know if our prized #1 draft dman '22 is going to be given every/multiple opportunities to play NHL in the '23 -'24 season
So you have some nice pieces to plug into the blueline. I do realize not all prospects turn out well, as has been pointed out on the board
But a top '23 forward draft with perhaps a cast of prospects emerging on forward lines and on defense - and even Soderblom - is our future. How soon is the unknown |
