Yeah, but for a 4th liner in a game where there aren't a lot of penalties, cant he use that time to check in on his clash of clans? |

Only a truly brain dead simpleton couldn't see the net benefit of having access to that technology. Tortorella is welcome to ban it from his bench. |

Kind of takes one of the same to deny that there's a trade off in attention and engagement.

so Wayne and Mario never used them and they did very well, are we now saying the kids in the league have the attention span of 0 seconds. For training sure but training isn't done well the play is going on a coach could pull someone aside and say look at the plays break down we need you to do this or that.
not so players can just see how nice they looked going down the ice.

The only issue I've had with ipads on the bench is the fact that when players are using them, they aren't paying any attention to the ice, and are susceptible to getting hit with the puck. It hasn't happened yet (I don't think?) but sooner or later it will. |

Any "all or nothing" opinion on this is dumb and counterproductive. You need ipads on the bench so the assistants can spend every waking minute looking at what they can hope to call back as offside/a penalty. You also need to make sure your players aren't spending every waking moment freaking themselves out over things that just happened on a screen.
Some players might need a screen shoved into their face to show how much they ballsed up, some might need a stern talking to, some might even need to be benched and not talked to. That's the job of the coaching staff and why they get paid so much to try to wrangle a disparate group of millionaires playing a game. |

I am guessing that Torts isn't banning them for use in practice, the locker room, and any type of pre-game prep and post-game analysis - just on the bench, during the game, where they can easily be a distraction. That is not being anti-technology but rather anti-distraction. I am guessing that he weighed their potential benefits against the distraction they can cause and came to the conclusion that they are not worth it. I don't see what is wrong with the decision. |

The trade off of being ON THE BENCH? You know, where the players are not playing. |

Torts has spoken dismissively about Analytics too. He’s a BSM more guy.

How will they read the newest HockeyBuzz articles from the bench? |
|

During a game why put more in a players head that might distract him.
Look at Tom Brady on the sideline always looking at a tablet, didn’t help.

Dinosaur coach from dinosaur team does dinosaur things... news at 11
Are we saying people communicating with one another is more what a dinosaur would do ? Versus individuals digesting information from devices, a generous description. Consider this, a player looking at the iPad picks up something of use, but doesn't discuss the discovery with any of his linemates - how effective might that be ? Limited, as 1 person is only 1/5 of the line. Technology doesn't change it from being a team game.
I am a data analytics professional, and obviously agree it provides tremendous value, when leveraged properly. These coaches do a ton of video analysis, at practices, meetings or between periods. There is a time and place.
Also, Torts didn't say the coaches couldn't have them. If they find something, will certainly discuss it with the players.
It's not the same as football. When a QB comes off the field, he's not going to learn anything from watching his defense, or the other team's offense, so paying attention to the field isn't necessary. In hockey, your opponent is defending your style of play and system. You can learn something by watching (and discussing) your other lines do what you were just trying to do. "Everyone is in the same boat" so to speak.

Nothing like a good distraction from actually watching what is going on out on the ice. Why would millionaires care about what is actually going on out there?
If a coach has something to point out, fine, other than that, they can watch during video meetings.

1) Glancing at an ipad and communicating with linemates are not mutually exclusive,
2) Players have been looking at up the jumbotron replays for decades with no ill effects,
3) None of the players are glued to the action 100% to begin with. They're toweling off, cleaning visors, picking at stick tape, sucking wind, venting, talking, looking at girls in the stands, etc. A few seconds with an ipad isn't moving the needle.
edit: I just find it hilarious that the same fanbase that lol'd at Dry Island and were on board with firing Hexy because he wouldn't allow alumni and pizza in the room are now trying to justify an arbitrary ipad ban lol. |

They aren't watching Red Tube. They're getting objective, visual feedback in the form of in-game video. It also isn't an isolating event necessarily where the player using the tablet is going to zone out. Coaches can talk to a player over their shoulder as they watch video to point things out. It is a coaching tool and an advantage. Why not use it?
This is an odd thing to restrict. If there was some sort of abuse of the iPads, then correct it. But an outright ban is regressive thinking.

I agree, but typically when you see a player with a tablet, it is because they asked for it, and there doesn’t appear to be any coaching going on - ie it’s one or two players rewatching the play that just happened. Tough to see on a tv broadcast though, so maybe I’m wrong.
It should be a valuable tool, I’m just not sure it always is. |

Most don't need their coach's input. Most of these guys can figure out what they're doing right and where adjustments need to be made. |

Yes but the justification for iPads was “coaching”, which isn’t really the case. |
