I am really interested to see where this league gets additional support - that was promised by the NHL and other places.

Would be nice if they could keep building momentum after the free agency / draft and find ways to keep their visibility until the start of the season.

Do they have a broadcast deal yet?

No idea re broadcast yet, but it would be an essential part of success the way i see it... hopefully that gets announced soon

I hope they get it right, this is their chance. I think they have built a lot of goodwill and interest, the two leagues was not helping push the woman's game.

I suspect TSN (which does broadcast a fair amount of woman's hockey) might pick them up, or at the very least, a regional Montreal broadcast rights sold.

Will be interesting to see.

Natalie Darwitz would be a good choice for GM for the Minnesota team. It will be interesting to see how this goes in hockey mad Minnesota. Will the fans that watch the Gophers Women’s team support this too? The Collective Bargaining Agreement has salaries between $35k-$80k. That’s not much. Is it true that Brian Burke is the league’s executive director? The Whitecaps had some good players but there wasn’t much excitement with so many hockey options in Minnesota. This will have to be heavily subsidized long term.

Burke will be the PWHL player association executive director. And salaries are not that high but there are pension plans, insurance, maternity leave etc…hopefully it goes up though

I don’t know about the other cities but if the Minnesota franchise wins, they could draw some. Last year the Women’s Gopher team drew some crowds over 2,000. I think they averaged around 1,600. It’s a tough sell but you have to start somewhere. We’ll see.

6 teams is perfect. would have preferred the original 6
mtl, tor, ny, bos, chi, det

sponsored by the respective nhl teams, playing in the same venues, using the same training facilities, doctors, hr, mktg....

anyway, good luck to them

I’m biased but a franchise in Minnesota was an astute choice by the league. Minnesota has an estimated 15,000 girls and women playing hockey. That’s more than any other state. A relative of mine had his daughter skating at 3 and playing on an organized team at 5 and a half.

Minnesota is the only team not in the East so they will have more travel. But with only 24 games it shouldn’t be a burden. This is all about promoting, supporting and investing in girls and women. There will be growing pains but this is a worthy effort.

Minnesota is definitely a great choice, apparently, the NHL helped the PWHL chose the locations of its first six franchise. At the press conference yesterday, it was also said that the league and not the teams would be paying for players' travelling fees, meaning that all the money will come out of the league for all team, therefore no further financial burden for a team that's far away like Minnesota.

I'm glad there's a professional league for women to play in and that it's getting backing by the NHL but I just don't se it happening. I mean, the WNBA has been around for 27 years now and it still drawing less than half capacity despite national TV broadcasts. If it's not the best of the best or doesn't have a nationalistic aspect to it, I doubt it will get a huge buy in from the general public. Hope I'm proven wrong.

not in the same arenas. it would look too empty but every one of those cities has a place that would more suitable for the crowd size to create more of an atmosphere.

It’s a long shot, for sure. It’s regional. They have a 10 year plan so let’s see how it goes. The WNBA is unwatchable for me. It looks like it’s devolving. I don’t believe in subsidizing forever.

If you think the WNBA is entertaining, you’ve set a low bar for entertainment.

An average 15 year American HS team would humiliate the world's best female team in a full contact game.
