(For what it’s worth)
Rumour site had
Willy for Parayko/Neighbours/1st can’t remember if there was more on leafs side but nothing of crazy value if there was.
Also a different site (ha) had Toronto as a potential landing spot for Peeke. |

Meh, maybe a few years ago.
But better than letting him walk. |

Not necessarily, the leafs have a $9 mill 90P guy for less than $7. Are they after the cup this year more than the following ones? My guess is yes and if it’s true taking the risk of him walking is the best choice. |

Ya for a couple of the other rumours I’ve heard I’d be in I were a leafs fan (the Dobson Wahlstrom thing) but not sure about this one - if maybe lean on using Willy as the own rental.
But who knows though eh - leafs will still produce with Bert/Domi/Klingberg covering that offensive loss in totals spread out and would gain a big dman who defends well and plays tough and has also won…tough one for sure |

That’s kind of what I mean, unless it’s a deal giving the leafs precisely what they need, as it stands a true top end shut down d man, then just keep Willie, better to have him than some meh guys when the team considers itself contenders. |

I wouldn't say more this year than other ones. In 2 seasons when we clear a lot of Cap room off the books from Tavares, both Mitch and Matthew's will still be in their primes and the team should still be going for it. The pieces for Willy could possibly help out down the road. That said, this year isn't any less important, so keeping him and letting him walk wouldn't be any worse than settling on a trade for the sake of it. Tough call to make without knowing what's out there to be had in a trade and who is interested. |

I’m okay for a trade so long as the return is an upgrade to something they need or hopefully not this, but making up for a serious injury to another core piece.
Also both Marner and JT will get resigned, just in different directions, Marner up and JT down to somewhere around $5-6mill (about where Malkin is currently). He’s the captain of the team and he’s about to hit 1000 points. I swear only in Toronto would a PPG player be a disappointment lol. Honestly though, I’ll be surprised if he plays anywhere else in his career. |

Tavares' problem as a disappointment is pretty easy to see.
It's been expectations and being boring. He's literally the most competent hockey player around. He produces like he's a star, has no personality, never does anything special, just produces consistently.
A plank of wood who scores 25-40g and 70-85p a year with nobody noticing.
Hence, he is Sundin, with less flair. His issue is that he has the unfortunate problem of signing a deal every team would sign him to at the time and now it looks bad. |

Well so long as the leafs judge him by his production and not his persona I certainly won’t mind him sticking around at a cheaper price.
I remember stumbling across something comparing his final 5 years as an islander vs his first five as a leaf. Pretty much exactly the same, he’s ridiculously consistent and unlike a lot of people say his game has not tapered one bit, but yeah, he’s not the most outgoing fella lol |

That's also why people slight him. He's just consistent. He's never teased anything other than his one Hart nominated year and being the most hyped prospect of his generation. He's boring as (frank). People will give flashy players who might flame out or be inconsistent with a lot more love, because you can remember something they have done.

For me a big question is whether they have better options next summer using the Nylander $ or now through a trade. In some ways they may be better off waiting as it becomes clearer who stays from the current D group and how much $ they to play with and what needs to be done( re-sign Sammy and Bert, replace Brodie, figure out what the hell they with Klinberg, Liljegren, etc) |

Well I can remember that he’s roughly a PPG player primarily on the 2nd line plain and simple. I’d prefer the boring one who produces over the fancy pants who looks good for only a few years usually do to who their linemate happens to be at that time tbh. |
