First!!! Think it's going to be a difficult draw against the much improved Wings. It'll be fun seeing the Cat again.

We haven't won back to backs yet and usually come out slower after a win, so I can see 2 quick goals by the Wings. If we can withstand the likely early barrage, it might a closer game. I was hoping Beauvillier would draw into this one, but maybe we'll see him on Saturday?

Who haven't they spent money on or not signed? The Ducks payroll is higher than the Hawks The Ducks actually signed R. Strome and Killorn to long term contracts for veteran stability, instead of giving one year contracts to lead for one year.

In your world that is not part of the "how to teat down a team and build it back up" But they did commit (spend) $50 million for the next 4 years for veteran leadership. Verbeek also signed Gudas to 3 x $4 mil. for veteran presence/5th, 6th defenseman.

So who have the Hawks spent their money on? Talk about poverty franchises. guess the money has been going to lawyers and extra insurance costs.

It's a good thing they didn't sign Perry to a 4 year contract.

Wasn't their offer $4.5 for Terry in arbitration before they settled for $7 per?

Zegras even though he got a significant bump in pay, wasn't playing with that smile on his face like he used to? Before he went on IR.
Terry making more than Zegras is a joke. I'm sure there is no resentment there. Pretty smart of the Blackhawks to make sure Toews and Kane were payed the same.

I do believe the Blackhawks also purchased the ice hogs and are redoing their arena? Over$30 mill?

On top of the settlements and what not.

Can't low ball FAs if you want to sign them.

Your original post said Anaheim is a poverty franchise because they don't pay their players. Now you criticize because they pay their players too much. Which is it?

What FA did they lowball that didn't sign?

I didn't know you were an expert in the Ducks locker room dynamics.

Re; Zegras
On what he missed during the offseason and contract negotiation
I missed my teammates, that's for sure. I love these guys. They've been so good to me, so supportive during the whole thing. It's definitely exciting to be back.

Maybe if Zegras was more than a one way player Verbeek would of offered him more.

And Samuelli bought the Norfolk AHL franchise a few years back and moved it to San Diego.

Still hate the Wings Zach, doesn’t matter to me that the Hawks only play then a couple of times a year. Wings and Preds are one and two for now, that should change once the Hawks are top tier again and develop a new playoff rivalry.

As stupid as it sounds, my hate for teams are not so much about rivalries (especially as you say, the Hawks need to redevelop rivalries once they are relevant again), but by how horrid I think the broadcasters are. And the Preds broadcasters are right up with the worst.

I also must admit that being a transplanted Chicagoan in Los Angeles, I root against all the LA teams, and the Orange County teams are irrelevant.

I know its hard to follow me, when players are treated as property as the RFAs are and are low balled i consider them poverty franchises because they act like they have no money. Maybe if Kane was more than a one way player, oh wait. So when you talk to your coworkers you are completely honest with them?

It was only $1.25 million more

You may not know but I hate the Leafs and like you it has nothing to do with a rivalry, however the team I hated more than the Leafs for a time were the Canucks from 2007 to 2013, and that was all about rivalry. I don’t care one way about the Canucks anymore but I still hate the Leafs.

You consider a team trying to manage their cap by trying to get RFAs to take a lower salary to be a bad thing? What would you say about a GM who got into cap trouble by paying RFAs and everyone else what they ask for?

So are the Hawks a poverty franchise because they didn't give Kurashev what he wanted, and still have to carry a 7th defenseman cap dump from another team, and sign and overpay 3 UFA's in order to get to the cap floor?

You should not ever hate the Maple Leafs. Every year in April they deliver both of us a very nice gift by crashing and burning in the playoffs. And on the very evening they get eliminated I open a very expensive bottle of wine and drink it all myself as I listen to all of the excuses put forth by the Toronto media. I find it very uplifting and good for my psyche.

You need more than one bottle for all those excuses, ahhmm I mean reasons. Myself I pour a few fingers … a few times of The Macallan. But I was surprised when my hatred of Vancouver eclipsed that of the Leafs for a few years.

it is interesting that some of the players that are most hated, have become the best analysts: Bieksa, Bissonette, Grimson, heck even Bruce Boudreau is great as an analyst.

I can do without Weekes, Reid, Johnson

Impressed by Scott too. I think he's knowledgeable and likeable at the same time. Really seems professional.

I think in that case you have to bite the bullet and pay him the same amount as Terry. Not every scenario is the same.

Not at all they are eating salary for other teams in exchange of futures. KD encouraged Kurashev to go to arb, arb came up with a figure and said make that times 2 years. I didn't hear of any ridiculous low ball attempt either.

After Zegras’ bridge deal who do you think will have the higher salary? And if Zegras is pouting because someone, in a different contract situation, makes more than him do you really think he’s a good fit on a team?

The Perry departure may not the best situation for Kyle of Chicago, but this will permanently dispel any thoughts that the Chicago management team has not done a 360 turnaround on transparency and treating sexual discretion properly.

I won't go on one way or another about Corey Perry (who always bothered me as a player), and I am sure that he was a very positive influence with Betsy on and off the ice in redraws to hockey.

I do wonder if Davidson's / team's announcement had been "Perry was inappropriate around other team employees" might have been the best way to quell all the crazy internet uncertainty concerning the episode.

Did they not do that because they WERE looking for a trade?

I am certain they weren't going to say he was on the prowl and jeopardize his family life. (Boys protect boys...)

I think that it was a pretty stand up reaction to go into the room the way Kyle did and tell them he was going to look for help, and paid a cheap price for the Vancouver unwanted contract of Anthony Beauvillier who isn't suited for a 4th line role in the pros. The move really doesn't move the needle for me, but it showed the locker room that Kyle was true to his commitment to now.

What I do wonder is if on March 8th, will he return to explain why he cast off anybody any team wanted?
Because though I do think a few of the other newbie forwards have playoff team value, most of them are looking for help on defense.

And no matter what the board thinks the vets who play regular shifts Murphy, and Jones seem to be his only backline chips unless a team simply wants a #7 guy with Tinordi, or the Russian.

How do tell the kids in the room that you are planning to replace a vet on the defense for next season, when improvement is going to be a bigger priority?

I never thought that after my initial ecstasy at win Bedsy, I would before one season, start feeling that he & his family and reps would be think that teh hawks are walking on eggshells to show willingness and quicker improvement so he doesn't bloat out the door back to Vancouver.

(I guess if the family had bought a condo here, I might feel a little more secure. But seeing him in every version of a Canuck's jersey gives me the shivers...)

Is there a young vet defender on a non playoff team who is looking for a new team, and worthy of, say that 2025 Toronto first rounder?

I guess I will stop trying to do Kyle's job now and watch Swedish prospects....

Well when he's the face of the franchise and he comes up as a RFA and you pay him less then a player who had identical stats for 2 years? And that other player seemed perform well when Zegras became a full time player 2 year ago?
I guess we'll see what happens in the future and maybe they have their sights set on Leo being the face of the franchise and plan on trading Zegras 2.5 seasons from now.

I don't think the Murphy and Jones are going anywhere yet.

I don't think Bedard is leaving Chicago either.

They should probably talk to the Kings since they don't think Clarke should be playing in the NHL.

On the night I pretty much know the Leafs will blow their brains out there is always a bottle of Nickel and Nickel Cabernet (Napa Valley) on hand decanting. It will be opened isometime in April 2024 I'm certain of that.

Jones because of the size of his contract, and Murph because a team would have to really feel he fills a gap during the upcoming playoff and the future ones. Despite all teh blow back on him, he would function well in the high pace of playoffs and provide enough "fill" of a team I down on the current playoff rearguards.

I meant when he is possible UFA, but I am paranoid.

I am not necessarily advocating a move to add to the defense as much as it possibly being a big swing at a quality defender not too old.

I wasn't necessarily thinking Brant Clarke, another work in progress, but sure, do it!

My thinking was along the lines of Noah hanafintype (yeah I know a left hander) who when Carolina traded him, seemed like discard, but continued to progress and I gotta say, he proved me incorrect, as he is a good all round defender.
and I don't necessarily mean him, but if a floundering team has a up and coming kid they don't want tom take. a chance on a fat contract with and they want a pick, I would fortify the right side that way, IF possible.
