Dallas picks:

Harley 18OA
Johnston 23OA
Robertson 39OA

No surprise a team drafting like that is still playing.

Just saw the reverse angle of the Bennett punch on Marchand .. I love it! I have been saying teams need to do this to Marchand for years now. Couldn't happen to a dirtier player IMO. Marchand asked for it by trying to fight Barkov at the opening faceoff and then going after Bennett, and he finally got what he deserved.

Jake led his team to the State High School Championship game in Minnesota as a freshman. Never any doubt how good he was going to be.

Stankhoven had a real good run towards the end of the season. Played well enough to to stick around for the playoffs.

I only saw the angle from Bennett’s right side and didn’t look like much. Hard to have much empathy for Marchand. He’s done worse.

Pretty much the only reason he fell to the 2nd round.

It’s interesting with him and Johnston, due to Covid the only looks scouts got on them in their draft year were the U18s. It really speaks to their work scouting them in previous years.

The Stars Director of Amateur Scouting drafted all those players.

Joe McDonnell is that guy who won 4-5 Cups in the Red Wings organization. Some of his draft picks there were Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronwall, Filppula, Howard and Franzen. Guy is a stud scout.

Looks like the 'Canes made some pretty smart defensive adjustments.

Rangers PP has gone silent too.

I don't think Mcdonnel did European scouting, did he? I thought it was known that Hakan Andersson scouted Zetterberg and Datsyuk. And before that Rockstrom scouted Federov and Lidstrom and Konstantinov?

My understanding is Joe was working in the Detroit organization in another capacity until 2003 when he went to scouting. But I could be wrong. I don’t know the particulars but he was part of the scouting team and those are players that team scouted and drafted in his time there.

Edit: Joe was with the Detroit organization for 18 years.

Correct, Anderson was possibly the only NHL scout to see Datsyuk, who he discovered while scouting Dimitri Kalinin. Datsyuk had already been passed over in previous drafts.

McDonnell was a scout for 8 years starting in ‘96 before he became Director of Amateur Scouting in Detroit. He left for Dallas with Jim Nill when he became GM of the Stars.

It’s Andersson, McDonell, and current Stars GM Jim Nill along with Ken Holland who are considered most responsible for building those Red Wings teams.

Thanks to you both.

It is a perpetual mystery to me. Why don't we ever hire/poach/lure people with such track records/or even those who show some promise? There is no salary cap for scouting. A deep pocketed organization should be all over such guys...🤔

You forgot a couple..

Oettinger was a late first the same year as Miro and Robertson.

In 1 draft they got Oettinger, Hieskenen and Robertson.

#1 100 point winger, #1 dman, and their starting goalie.

Been wondering the same thing for years. My only thought is comfort and familiarity with personal relationships. Kinda like the same coaches being recycled.

I’ve seen more than a few GMs speak over the years about how the rankings are influenced most by how hard scouts fight for prospects. A guy like McDonnell has worked with Jim Nill for so long and having to build that trust with a new GM and other scouts is probably not worth a small pay bump.

I’ll also add, as much as I didn’t like Fletcher, he did make it clear the Flyers were lacking in a lot of departments including scouting and was beginning to rectify those issues. Time will tell if the new regime continues to fix/build those areas.

I’ve been seeing a lot about Montreal definitely drafting a forward this year. They seem to be highest on Demidov. I also think they won’t take Catton because they already have Suzuki and Caufield as smaller forwards in their top 6. So, if say Demidov and Lindstrom go in the top 4, I could see Montreal all of a sudden open to trading back. With how many D will go in the top 10 they’ll still get one of the better forwards at 12 without reaching at 5, plus pick up additional assets.
