It has been determined Tavares must be traded.
Domi @ 5/6 x 5/6 is insane. He scored 9 goals last year with 1 playoff goal.
Having never played more than 3 years on any team, just take the 4 x 4 Max and be happy at home. |

But yet, he's not going anywhere. All of us can want him gone, but he's got one year left and then he's gone anyway. Why the rush? Let nature take it's course. Offer him a realistic contract (say, 2 or 3 years at $2m per) and if he rejects it, let him walk. His trade value is almost nil without retention and it's a case of diminishing returns if you retain salary. The Tavares era is coming to a close, either way. This is Matthews' team now and he should be wearing the C.

Because the "change" needs to be management admitting they (frank)ed up and getting rid of him.
Why the rush? Let nature take it's course.
Because the team needs the cap space more than it needs a player in decline.
Offer him a realistic contract (say, 2 or 3 years at $2m per) and if he rejects it, let him walk.
That's a realistic contract? I bet his agent disagrees. He definitely rejects it and walks. Which is why you get rid of him now. Because the Leafs can only use him if he plays for free and he won't want to play for free. Nor should he, nor would he fit what they need.
His trade value is almost nil without retention and it's a case of diminishing returns if you retain salary.
Not true. His value is nil to certain teams, but not to all.
After his signing bonus, the Leafs can retain 25%, a cap floor team can retain 50% and his cap hit becomes 4.125 AAV. To a contender, he provides value at that price and his real dollar salary would be peanuts.
The Tavares era is coming to a close, either way. This is Matthews' team now and he should be wearing the C.
It must end now. |

Then you're delusional.
It's not that "he will say no". It's that Leafs management doesn't have the brains or the balls to do it.
He has every reason to leave if the Leafs make it clear they don't want him anymore because players almost always waive when told they're unwanted. It's only a matter of finding a suitable landing spot afterwards.

He HAD to go? That's hilarious. I'd rather take a suspended Kadri than an invisible Kerfoot. Every day of the week.
Kadri had 16 playoff goals and 34 playoff points in 33 playoff games for Colorado.
The suspension was worth a Cup. He took it, Colorado took it, the Leafs were too stupid to keep it.
Yes, a players best games don't count. Excellent logic. At least you're consistent with the Kadri logic of "he sucked except that time he scored a bunch and a won a Cup".
So the Leafs go to Tavares and say, we don't want you this year and won't keep you when your contract expires, but he still says he wants to stay? Makes no sense.
Matthews took short deals at higher cap hits so he could maximize his money every time his contract runs out. He's not leaving a penny on the table, never has, never will. - Rare_Jewel
Kadri is no good to you if he's eating popcorn in the press box.
It would be nice to see Marner points spread more than bunched up with a string of not so much pressure to score games |

This is not a situation where management has told him to waive and he is saying no.
This is a situation of management not even asking him to waive.
That's not the Muskoka Five. That's the Mimico Mafia. That's on Shanahan.

He was good for a Stanley Cup, a bunch of playoff goals and points for Colorado though. A lot more useful than Kerfoot ever was. Or Barrie.

It would be nice to see Matthews score more than 1 playoff goal after chasing 70 so hard.

any retention on JT contract is pointless.
cause it will cost a high draft pick which the Leafs don't have or a top prospect to move him which IMO is not smart. |

And then, afterwards, you have to replace his production before you use any savings elsewhere.

That's a very weird trade. Mostly because that's the kind of thing you'd see at the draft when teams know how it's going and who's left on the board.

Well the haul seems to be worth it.
Until the guy you had #7 on your list is still available at 18 and ends up getting picked 19th.
