Good write up, Bill. I've been saying it for a while... the draft is a virtual roulette game and because of that, it's very difficult to find a reason to trade a current roster player for future promises that are statistically likely to never pan out. Not saying it can't be done, but it's a massive gamble in the vast majority of situations. I'd rather trade roster players for bonafide prospects, or prospects for draft choices. It's a very difficult game to play.

Would be a nice player to have but wish some of these guys that want/need a change of scenery were centers.

McGroarty pulling the Gauthier. I wonder what teams like the Flyers and Jets do to insulate themselves from a college prospect's right to not sign with the team. Do they put more of an emphasis on prospects not in college especially in the 1st rd? In the Flyers situation, would they be hesitant to draft Buium and Eiserman if they were still on the board? Interesting times if there will be more college hockey prospects who excercise their right not to sign with the club that drafts them.

what interesting is the flyers where scouting the jets big time and there was lots of smoke. wonder if anything becomes of it.

American college kids not wanting to play in canada may be a thing going forward. It may make teams leary if it becomes a norm. Otherwise, they will still draft them if they think BPA or what not. No way of really knowing they won't sign unless they tell you ahead of time.

It seems that a college prospect who feels he is ready after 1 year of college to turn pro is becoming an issue. So it seems if GMs do not draft a college prospect (especially in the 1st rd) with that premise, buyer beware. Certainly a GM can hold onto the prospect, but his value will continue to drop. With this McGroarty news out there, I will be shocked if the Jets get anywhere close to #14 overall pick value.

Even though the players get the hate, and I'm sure they do deserve some of it, I would almost guarantee it's the agents/advisors that are pushing this more than the players.

It's not hard to convince some teenager who is about to make millions on other possibilities...

"Not sure you want to sign there, you could get more endorsements here and there, the weather and women are better here and there, you could see family better here and there....so what you do is this."

This is why the game of hockey lacks passion now, instead of it being I want to play the game I love and make millions doing it now it's what's best for them. (frank) them. Deal with whatever for 5, 10, 20 years then you can live the dream anywhere you want for the rest of your life. If that isn't good enough then go work at a grocery store and live with your parents.

Not sure this anything but coincidence, Briere drafted Knuble (4th rd) and MacPhearson (6th rd) who went to college. I'm curious if Briere drafts college prospects any higher this year.

Pretty apparent why the Flyers could potentially be enamored with D!ckinson. Production, measureable and relationship with the Hunters. They would clearly know the prospect they are drafting. The current regime cannot afford another Gauthier debacle.

wonder if they look at jared wooley in the later rounds. clearly seen him plenty and "jonesy" probably all wet with a 6'4 dman.

Possible, his profile looks similiar to Hunter McDonald who seems destined to eventually get a shot in the NHL.

When there were rumors about Walker possibly going to the Jets at the trade deadline, maybe Briere was laying groundwork for McGroarty. A winger with size is a piece this organization is lacking. Pure speculation.

I don’t see it. It’s happened more than few times before Gauthier and hasn’t changed teams approaches yet. Plus the college game has been getting better over the years, so you’d be passing on a lot of talent.

One thing I’ll note, seems like all of these kids are Americans and from the USNTDP. I read an article shortly after the Gauthier trade that mentioned how that program has an entitlement problem. I wrote it off as just an old guy complaining but…

FYI: I am one of those people that hate it when people want to walk their dog in my yard...that's why I buried chicken wire under sod and ran wire to a covered battery.

Seems like there needs to be some changes to the rules to protect teams. Maybe there could be some kind of torture applied to prevent it too?

Or they could get rid of the draft and let players sign wherever they want....
