I like what the Caps have done. They are giving OV a chance, but some other team is going to have to bail that out of cap trouble. They are 13 mill over. Realistically it will be 3.8 mill when you account for the LTIR of Backstrom.

Per Yohe, Reilly smith to Rangers looks likely.

Do you remember being excited about the start of free agency? This is an absolute joke. What the hell is going on with Dubas and company?

I'm definitely not as eager as you to get rid of him. I'd take Kakko back... At least there'd be a NHL ready winger back. Smith for picks creates even more holes.

Might as well trade Pettersson now for a 1st before he gets injured or has a poop year. Might as well start talking to teams about Rust too.

Other problem is that this team starts tanking and Jarry’s value plummets even further when he ends the season with a 3.05 GAA

He and Backstrum make up that $13 million. No wiggle room after that (really).

Smith for picks is a good deal as long as they're decent picks. We need room in the lineup to bring in another LW and to leave some spots for young guys.

A 2nd and 5th for Smith is good business. I was thinking I'd be happy with getting what we paid for him (3rd round pick)

Dubas's logic for Smith wasnt bad, it just didnt work out. better to move him now and hope you can redeploy that salary cap better.

doesnt matter to me because 1) we are likely going to trade it eventually. 2) the Rangers are a top team in the league in 2024-2025. That pick would likely be a low 2nd rounder. In 2027, they could look a lot different and that pick could be more valuable.

Penguins retaining $1.25M of Smith's cap (25%). That makes sense.

Idk, must be somebody from Boston we haven't grabbed yet.

Before trading Smith we had 12 forwards already and 3 LWs for the top-9. They want to get a LW for Sid, somebody they think will work well with him and Rust but will sign a short-term cheap "show me" deal. Clearly that's not going to be some high-end big-name guy. We'll find out who they get some time this week. Even if they just get another DOC-like guy, that could work better than Smith was working for us.
