I like Hathaway but, no, I didn't like the extension: 1) He'll turn 33 this fall. Not wild about two additional years of commitment beyond 2024-25, 2) I'd like to see comparable role players in the farm system, much younger and only costing the minimum or close to it OR, alternatively a one year prove-it deal for a younger role playing type. Contracts like Hathaway and Poehling are fine individually but they add up when there are several such extensions on the same roster. |

my long-term concern (short-time is no issue at all) about Garnet Hathaway -- who will be 35 years old at the conclusion of his new contract extension -- being able to sustain his current level of effectiveness for three more seasons
Sounds like he doesn't but hearing why would be interesting. Any similar concerns about Nick Seeler who will also be 35 at the end of his contract or the fact that DB quadrupled the salary of a 30 year old 3rd pairing dman instead of getting picks for him at the TDL?

With Lappy as a coach in the A, you would think they could get him some younger prospect types to work with that fit that mold….I would think he’d be a great teacher for that type of player. |

Lappy takes a lot of poop around here for not getting the results out of what seems to be a “good” minor league roster but what’s in bold says it all to me. I don’t mind the Hathaway extension but it’s less of an issue if you remove the bigger deals. It doesn’t matter who you sign in the bottom six when missing these type of player in your system, when you’re giving out too much money in the top six. Nobody blinds an eyes at Chicago’s signings one year ago because they moved the bad deals out first. |

Thanks. Agree.
As you said GH will be 33 in november. IMO no team would have given him 2 years and over 2 million that the flyers did. Teams have somewhat wised up a little.
Danny boy said he didn't want a raise so thats why re-signed him. No schitt he didn't as he knows there was none coming his way. He probably though it was a crank call when they offered him that 2 year ext. Horrible logic.
one thing he flyers excel at is losing at the margins. they almost always over pay in $ and term for these types. Hell matt martin and clutterbuck are FA. They would probably take a 1 year deal for 1 million and get the same results as GH. Still paying ND 1.7. |

One thing with Seller to me is he doesn't have a ton of milage on his body for a player his age. so that is a plus. Now he keeps blocking shots and laying his body on the lien at every turn (which he will) then you will lose your effectiveness quick.
Another bad signing to me. |

it does matter. Then you more than likely have to overpay vets to fill those roles. |

I did not care for the GH singing. I think he could have been flipped at the TDL for a mid round pick. At least they did not sign a middling FA to a long term contract. Hopefully the 2025 draft is great. |

Notice anytime the Flyers re-up these guys (Hathaway, Seeler,Poehling) it’s done under the pretence that these are good “culture” guys. Because it really doesn’t fit a rebuild…they have to sell it or explain it another way….Jonesy hit it on the head last year in his radio when he said “it’s not a rebuild, we just tell the fans that”…”the players know better”.
I guess rebuild is the Loose term they continue to use….but I think after DB’s stagnant summer it’s pretty obvious. |

The 25 draft is a strong deep draft….but after watching how they faired last week, who can get excited….when you’re probably looking at 13, 26, and 30. If that’s the whole rebuild plan it’s as bad as I’ve seen… |

Yeah I think the Flyers will be bottom 8 this year as currently constructed. They have worse goaltending and defense. They might score more but not enough to counteract the goaltending and defensive shortcomings.

what's funny is "jonesy" watched all these teams over the years being involved on tv.
You think he would have some semblance of what is needed to win and contend. He hasn't shown it at all to me. Nice guy but a fn fraud as well in his current role.
Seeing how they ended the season and how they start is only story line I am looking forward to at the moment. Does torts kill them in camp to try to get off to a "hot" start? Doee he reel it in a little so he doesnt lose them in the 1st 60 days? Any lingering hard feelings from ex selke and his clique?
Who are the torts guys in the "room" now? RP - Seeler - GH? laughable. |

this will be fun to watch. Has potential to be very bad.
Not sold on Sam as anything but a solid backup to play 35 games. his career save % is under 90. Granted only 60 something games.
The Ivan who knows. didn't look good at all though he will get a pass for now. If either one falter what do they do? |

Hopefully kosolov doesn't become a female dog and not come back. With a little seasoning in the ahl he could be an option. |

Seeler and GH should not have been resigned in my opinion. At least these are shortish contracts. They have not (at least yet) locked into an unnecessary FA contract. Hopefully TK asks for more than they are willing to give and he gets moved at the TDL.
I will take the lack of action thus far over the alternative. The alternative is what got the Flyers in this current mess.

I wonder why Fletcher didn’t sign Gauthier to an ELC immediately after his first development camp? Seems like a no brainier to lock up his his top 5 draft pick as soon as he could since Fletcher apparently promised the kid a roster spot after his first season.
- jd250
The point I don’t get ….Briere was the assistant GM at the time ? No? He would have been privy to what was being said to him and what was “promised”.
Totally agree…. What jd50 doesn’t get is he thinks cutter was “appearantly “ told he would be in line up after year 1 college…
But that doesn’t make logical sense. If the player was SO GOOD to guarantee the player that they’d just sign him and have him skip the year and go pro. Likely yes it was the plan and discussed that it would be POSSIBLE maybe after year 1 but guaranteed? Makes no sense that would be told. More likely hey kid do year in college and let’s see where it is at end of season.
Like you said surely db knew of talks between cf and cutter. He was top 5 pick. Everyone in front office knew loosely the likely plan. And it might even have been to almost certainly sign him after year 1. But every team and gm is gonna give themselves a little wiggle room. Guarantees are almost never given out. |

Agree, Seelers contract is 2 years too long. I would be fine if Hathaway got a 1 year extension. |
