Problem with Soderstrom is he hasn't proven anything at the NHL level and the Wings already have way too many defensemen. Would i prefer a young guy with potential playing on the 3rd pair...yes but what the heck do you do with all the other bottom pairing guys the Wings already have? Do you trade Johansson for him or risk losing Johansson on waivers? Would this guy be happy playing in the AHL again?

If he was a proven top 4 RHD then Yzerman should be thinking about it especially if he could give them Rasmussen for Crouse in the deal. If they make a trade for a defenseman, they would have to take Petry or Holl or at least one defenseman off their roster back. I doubt Utah wants either Petry or Holl even if their defense isn't any better than the Wings defense and probably worst.

He's draft +5 and hasn't cracked the coyotes lineup. THE COYOTES. I wouldn't show interest in anyone not drafted by GMBA.

Just waive Holl and get Soderstrom. Wings are not playing Holl. Maybe SJ will trade for him at half salary for FC.

Wings would still end up with 8 defensemen even with waiving Holl unless they waive Johansson too. So who sits for this unproven guy to play?

Berggren

Sitting Berggren does nothing for the logjam on defense. I don't get why people think Soderstrom is a must get. Sure there is potential there but that's all there is at this point and this guy is as likely to be another Lindstrom for the Wings than being a top 4 RHD. If the Wings are going to trade assets, at least they should do it to fill holes and Soderstrom would just be filling a prospect need not a roster need at this point.

Yzerman should just try and bite the bullet and try and pry someone like Rasmus Andersson from the Flames instead like Vancouver did with Hronek. Get them to take Holl in the trade too. They have the cap space to take Holl and the roster spots to play him. Berggren, Holl and a 2025 1st round pick (top 10 protected) for Rasmus Andersson. Wings get their top 4 RHD and the Flames get Berggren, a 1st round pick and a warm body for their defense that isn't good but isn't horrible either.

Hey, Captain Serious, it was sarcasm!
Y is going to either use Holl and Petry, and with Petry he has no other option, or dump an asset to get rid of Holl and bring someone else in. There still is a lot of off-season left, but the longer this goes on the more likely that the D is set. Anderson would be VERY expensive. But a deal with acquiring Kadri and Anderson might be the solution, but would mortgage the future...........Y has painted himself in a corner and dumping Walman for FC has put him in deeper. Any trade now is in desperation mode and will cost the Wings, maybe too much to act upon.

Maybe a deal with Montreal for Justin Barron would be a partial solution.
Berggren for Barron, and then waive Holl and trade Lagesson and Holl.

The only way to trade Holl is probably for him to waive his NTC. And if given a choice of being waived and playing in GR or traded to a rebuilding NHL team on his no-trade list, he may wish to have a chance to play in the NHL and waive his NTC. But who at this point wants 2 yrs of Holl? That is the Holl hell that Stevie has created for himself, and he has no "Get Out of Holl Hell Free" card to play.
