I mean it's plausible that this is a move that uses capspace that you can defer until you need it - like it's only $1.5m so there's limited risk and Hakanpaa fits the type of need you'd want at the TDL, so you can LTIR him for now, let him heal and if progresses as expected or hoped then you have a guy who probably, if healthy, becomes a very useful addition for the playoffs. You get him cheap @ $1.5m because you're offering him 2 years which is insurance for both of you.
Like . . .Lyubushkin was paid $3.25m x 2 and he is smaller and worse than Hakanpaa.
Hakanpaa played 16:10, 19:30 and 19:40 in the regular season the last three years in Dallas - and then it was 18:20 and 20:30 in the playoffs in those first two years, so his playoff deployment increased.
Lyubushkin over the last three years was 17:30, 15:10 and 17:10 - on defensively weaker teams. In the playoffs he was 14:00 and 16:30 (years 1 & 3).
I mean look it could be a horrible failure on the part of management and the medical staff, but I sincerely believe it's a calculated risk based on the medical examination believing he will heal and be a very affordable asset. Your worst case scenario is you throw $1.5m on LTIR.

The delay in finalizing the deal suggests that it just won’t go forward without medical clearance and that they’ll have the cap space to use in some other way.

The deal isn’t finalized, my guess is he lives in Finland and it won’t be finalized until he’s here in Toronto where the team’s doctors can go over him directly.

If he passes the physical with his knee issues, it'll get done. Unlike Dubas, looks like Treliving doesn't have a problem picking up D-men with size. Not very likely that Treliving would have shipped out Mason Marchment for Malgin.

Here's the thing with moving Marner out IMO... High risk/some reward. If you ask him to waive and give him a list of teams then the most likely scenario is he'll feel unwanted, get sand stuck in his vag, then walk as a UFA. Also, if he agrees, then with his hit and one year left, I can't see us getting the moon. Orrrrrrrrrrr, we extend him for a stupid amount on money and watch him continue to suck in the playoffs for years. Either way we're (frank)ed.

If he was fully healthy his AAV would be double the 1.5 they got him for.

His contract still isn’t official so the leafs obviously have some concerns. Like I said they likely just want their own doctors to go over him first.

That's a really poopty deal for the Leafs. St Louis would get the two best players in the deal. Maybe the Leafs would do it if they wanted to get much older and much less talented. The one floated in the internet rumor mill was Marner and Liljegren to the Rangers for Trouba and Lafreniere. Doubt it happens, both Trouba and Marner have NMC in their contracts.
Schenn is 32, Parayko is 31, so we'd be older, but they're signed for 4 years same as Auston, and should still be effective for their term. Schenn is a good two way centre, and a leader who would help solidify that position once Tavares moves on (from the team, or to LW at a lower cap hit). Parayko would do the same for the D.

Schenn is closer to Domi in talent level than he is to Marner. He's a 50 point guy playing top six minutes and was a -22 last year. He's a fart box and he's 32 making $6.5M a year. Marner is about a 100 point guy heading into his prime. Paryko scored 3 points more than Liljegren playing 27 more games. He makes more than twice what Liljegren makes and is 6 years older.

St. Louis would get the best player in Marner, but Parayko is twice the defenseman that Liljegren is right now. I know Liljegren's development has been held back for one reason or another over the years, but will he ever reach his potential here.
