Trouba isn't the player he used to be. He's also probably the most reckless player in the league with his elbows. I know Yzerman was getting him at significant retained money and with only two years left he isn't terrible risk at least. I expect another down season from Trouba and Drury next offseason will have to move him at 50% for FCs or add a sweetener.

It seems that CBJ would eagerly pay Raymonds' price to get a young stud and get above the cap floor! It seems CBJ has a lot of good young players in return for him. DRW could use a RD or a center or maybe both! I think that would solve a hold out in to training camp.

I had someone follow up with me and it sounds like the deal wasn’t nearly as close as it is being reported. Whether that is the case or no, if this is what the year shapes up to be like, his value won’t go up next year for sure

Dave Pagnotta saying talks have picked up with Raymond:

Pagnotta added that talks between Raymond and Detroit have picked up over the last 10 days, but that the two sides are, “still grinding away at it.” The Red Wings kick off training camp on September 18th.

Third pairing, given his lack of foot speed, is the perfect place for Trouba. Yes, the contract is far from ideal, but most Rangers' fans have said that since the day the deal was signed. If he plays like he did before the injury last year, New York will be quite happy.

Fox is an equally slow skater yet excellent overall. The problem is Trouba is a stupid player and gets out of position often while also being slower than he used to be. Also why he throws elbows so often to compensate for being caught out of position. Still has a good shot, but does nothing else worth close to his cap hit. $8m for a 3rd pairing player is a major expense for a contender like NYR.

I truly appreciate the drop in. I question that if injuries start to hit that his cap$ won’t be one of the first things fans look to. Regardless, for Detroit’s purposes the expectation would have been much different in terms of fan base. With a glut of veterans whose deals get a significant amount of scrutiny (at least on this comments section) the proposed usage rate would be one more strike in terms of unhappy fans.

NYR has a glut of enviable talent, and if the affordability of that deal on the 3rd line is one that doesn’t have fans upset, nothing but kudos. As the season progresses it will remain to be seen how it all goes down. Best of luck, and enjoy the season Jan!

With trade rumors now surrounding the Ducks’ longest-tenured player, Cam Fowler, expect them to name Radko Gudas their next captain before the season starts, Friedman said. The hulking 34-year-old defender was Anaheim’s best defensive player last season by a wide margin after signing a three-year, $12MM deal in free agency, leading the team with a +14 rating, 128 PIMs, 154 blocks, and 232 hits. The captaincy in Anaheim has been vacant since Ryan Getzlaf retired in 2022.

I am sure you appreciate this post!

Wonder if Stevie would want to bring in Fowler?? I don't see it happening unless a LD has a devastating injury, because I don't see Verbeek wanting any of our LD in return.

At this point, any player associated with Michigan gets some hate in the comments. May be best to keep moving on this one

Howdy, Jeremy. Insightful posts throughout the summer, although I've not engaged much, I've read everything you posted. Excellent and thought-provoking.

As I've listened to various pods, read multiple articles, and digested all of the thoughts, I can't help but think that *maybe* we're at an inflection point for the team. By that, I mean all of the Yzerman selections & trades are starting to come to relevance.......we're gonna know what we're gonna have from internal resources vs what we're gonna need to bring in to build a more viable contender. Does that make sense?

Mo & Rayzor are the current foundational blocks of the future, propping up Larkin who's probably at the apex of his career/performance level (I think he's got a few good years left) but we need to find the guy/s who will be the team motor and heart. Mo. Rayzor. Those deals will get done....funny how some are getting nervous, but more aren't freaking out. From these 2, we start looking at Mazur, Danielson, Kasper, Cossa, etc... I don't lose much sleep over the building blocks growing in the "A" and "E"...and college. There are some damn good players germinating down there.

We don't need an aging, reckless D-dude. Trouba could've been value-added a few years back, but not now. Laine would probably have held a kid back from coming up and growing with the team... Zegras would've brought some power to the team and he's young enough to be with the team longer-term.

Johnny Hockey. Devastating news. Even worse given the celebration that was impacted is unforgiveable. Not that my thoughts mean much, but the Family is on my church's prayer list. Goes to show how fragile life can be.....

Broadcast stuff seems to be settling in, but it seems like a duck to me: calm above water, but feet moving like mad below the surface. Feels like this may be a transitional season, something's gonna change by this time next season....

Excited to see how the camps go and who shocks us......looking forward to seeing the thoughts of the folks on the blog. Dusting off my DRW jersey and hats!!!!

I do think you’re right. Buium has made his way to GR. Mazur is considered to be a “possible” for a Detroit role. Johansson is out of options. Eddy looks ready for the next step but will need to develop. We got a little spoiled with Mo and Razor. Larkin was the first 19 year old I could remember in a long time to come in and contribute. Then we see Mo come in around 20 (stayed in Sweden due to shut down) and Ray come in at 19. Augustine took MSU by storm and I’d like to see him get to his ELC. Kasper needs to force his way back into the conversation as Danielson is eating up that oxygen. This should be enjoyable but you get so much constriction. All but 4 players are gone from the last regime. 3 of those 4 are fighting for relevance. I want Seider’s deal done. If Raymond can close in on something that works beautiful. We need some of the veteran deals to expire and move on. That sounds cold and calloused. These are human beings, but you know more than anyone sport is a “now” industry. If Danielson puts someone on waivers, I’m good with that. Same with Kasper and Mazur. Soderblom, boy if he could use his frame and be the grinder that can restrict shots against and make life tough. I love where you’re at, and as always your support means more than I can say.

We know this team tends to over-ripen kids. The issue is potentially missing out on a potential “star”. Some argue Tatar & Nyquist could’ve been much higher calibre players if they’d been given the chance to grow NHL capability, etc…. We know this is a good team, and we’re all chompin’ at the bit to get back into the SCPO. The thing is, some of these kids may make THE push this year and we’re already at the cap (assuming Mo, Rayzor, & Johnny Burgers sign).

This, to me, is a transitional year. These vets clogging spots will be gone after this season and we can be more realistic about pushing into the SCPO. I feel like last year was supposed to be THIS year but Rayzor hit his stride and Lord Gordie gave us a blessing. I’m hoping to make the SCPO this season, but EXPECT to next year.

If a kid plays outplays a broken down vet and they don’t have a “no move”, waive them. That 1million should cover what the kid gets. I want people pushing. I’ve only seen him say it once, but apparently it’s the yearly talk from Jiri Fischer. You don’t get a job, you take a job. He’s got a very stoic approach to the kids. That said, he also checks in on them year round. Jiri stared down Holland when he made the NHL. Simply said, “if you’re not going to keep me, then don’t give me the extended tryout”. He is a humble guy in regular conversation, but man he can turn on the heat.

See, for me, I never saw value added to holding back. These kids have to know it’s “Crap or get off the pot” for some of them. But some of these kids need that push. I’d think at this level, they get it. Johansson *may* turn out to be a bit of a surprise, he looked pretty reliable in GR….not earth-shattering but reliable. Say what you will, I’m impressed with Maatta; the dude plays a solid defense, not gonna get 30pts out of him, but he did well with Eddy, even worked some with Mo. We need MUST have those guys who know how to shut things down….and when.

We all tend to agree that our D is a black hole. There needs to be a revelation. Eddy’s gonna be a rock solid D-dude. Chiarot was serviceable, too expensive but was more gritty last season….a sure sign he realizes the end is near. Holl….some pundits think with more ice time, we’ll get a better return….I just think he needs to be waived. We can use the $1.?m.

Fischer was epic, no BS, rough on ice, hard-nosed, and had a really good pass to set hp o-zone exits. Between him & Nick-squared, we should see some improvements defensively.

It all boils down to the kids kickin’ ass-terisk in camp and forcing changes in the line up. It’s simply time.

If the wings looked to a trade with Columbus for Raymond it would have to include Werenski. Bring him home.
