Utah and Leafs have to make their Lily trade already.

My favourite part about the “leafs have started all the recent years slowly” argument that I’ve been seeing is that would also basically mean that they haven’t changed and they’ll be leaving the playoffs early, as in the first round… again. If they even stop being 9th in their conference that is.

I like how it's all cautious and "small sample size" when they are winning and now they've lost a few it's just exactly what they will be.

My favourite comments in the last blog were it is 100% Matthews fault on the OT goal. Berube didn't seem to think so.

The Leafs actually started strong and there are some signs that things are different. Some reasons for being optimistic include. Knies looks like a solid long term core power forward for this team. The power play, which looks to be in pre-pre season form has significant room for improvement. Both Tanev and OEL look like solid additions to a team needing defensive improvement. Stolarz looks like a steal. Two of the losses featured horrible goaltending while the flu bug worked its way through the team.

Berube is protecting his best player. Matthews was gassed and gave away the puck in his own zone in a 3 on 3 situation. It was a really bad give away on his part.

Berube said it was bad for everyone on the ice, which is also true.

You mean the coach didnt lay 100% of the blame on his new captain?
Weird eh.

True it was bad. Stolarz had no chance on that play. Matthews had possession and he didn't have to pass in that situation. Could have skated up ice and waited for an open man. It was a bad play and a bad decision.

Meh, its early.
New coach, new systems.
It will take time.
Hopefully not too long, it would be nice to finish first in the division

Yes and the other players failed to read this and make the decision to support him. By protecting Matthews he is ripping on Marner and Riley. After the blast he gave Matthews a couple of games ago I am not so sure he is protecting him. 100% is a pretty bold/and usually dumb statement

Ya, he cant keep blasting Matthews this early, so he spreads it around.
Anywho, on to the next game.

Read Matthews comment too. It was definitely a bad pass and he shares the most blame. Marner was inside the blue line and in position to get to that pass when Matthews started to go around the net. He thought Marner was going to stay and support him. Matthews was wrong. Marner being such a smart player should have known Matthews was gassed it was obvious. That is why the Bruin's player made a great read and chased Matthews behind the net. He was not worried about Matthews pulling away and creating a 3 on 2.

Marner went to the bench which according to the coach was the wrong play given the situation. Matthews guessed wrong and probably should have taken another look before starting to make the pass.

I guess the M & M chemistry is not 100% so maybe try splitting them up.

They aren’t even in the playoffs closing in on 12.5% of the season being done.

Excuse making isn’t flying for me, they’re not learning, they’re playing like poop.

Their wins weren’t against great teams, so it wasn’t me saying that lol.

Brutal on Matthews part with that poopty pass but where the (frank) was Marner when it was very obvious Matthews was being pressed on? He should have gotten back.

Yeah but like I said, he was being pressed by the Bruins and all Marner did was sit up high when he should have been back checking.

Good points all. Need the support to complete those short passes to exit the zone safely.

They chased Vasi from the ice in their win over Tampa. That looked like a different team than the one we've mostly seen since.

The three losses are the small sample size. The Leafs played the Rangers evenly. The only difference was the Rangers managed to run Stolarz three times without a call and Shesterkin was unmolested.

The Leafs beat the living poop out of Devils, Tampa and Pittsburgh. Those games were not close.

Leafs lost two with horrible goaltending. Both Hildeby and Woll had terrible games while the team was dealing with a flu bug. Last night could have gone either way. The sky is not falling. Its an unpleasant loss.
