Defensive game
This one’s not close. Nothing against Jack, but Matthew is one of the best defensive players in the NHL. The career plus minuses of these players…..Matthew’s 142, Hughe’s -41

Dude walks up to the bar and says he wants the best whiskey. He gets the matthews who tops out at 60% alcohol content. Complains about the price and ends up with a 40% in Hughes. you get what you pay for. Usually works out better when you don't compare a 60 goal scorer to a 40 goal scorer. When you factor in matthews has gotten closer to 70 than Hughes has gotten to 50, this comparison makes no sense.

This is almost like asking if you'd take Hughes over Makar. Nope!

You used to ask who was better McGod or Matthews. That argument has sailed.

Matthews has missed a ton of games with injury. His push for 70 last year resulted in the leafs totally being unprepared for the playoffs. The leafs seam to do better as a team when he doesn’t play. On that basis I think the leafs would do better to send him packing. They are better balanced without him.

Hockey is a team sport, Matthews is always me, me, me. Just another selfish player.

Hughes is far better as a team player. Given the choice, I do not like Matthews if winning is the objective.

BTW for the fool who said Michkov, all of Russia is reporting Demidov is a better learner, passer, skater, visionary, and scorer. Michkov is a specialist which is why SKA let him go early. Watch and weep.
