He's not been out of the league for 5 years. He last played in 22-23. He's also not for sure coming back. He's going to try and get back into shape and see what happens. The reason he retired was because when he was training his body kept failing him. He has to pass that hurdle before he can even think about getting back.

"I haven't spoken about this to a lot of people, but it's definitely still in there," Toews said. "I've talked to a lot of the guys that are done, and a lot of them will say that desire to be on the ice competing and to be in the locker room with the guys never goes away. It's just something that you have to accept when your time comes. So there's that, but at the same time, I think there's a big part of me that really wants to give it my all, to get back on the ice and see where it takes me.

"There's a part of me that really doesn't feel like my career is over yet, and who knows what this next part of the journey looks like, as far as getting back on the ice and trying to make a return to the NHL. There's never any guarantees in life, but I'm going to give it my best shot. I'm going to enjoy every step of the way.

"As hard as it’s been at times, I look back now and I’m pretty thankful for it all. So we’ll see what happens."

Hey Chunk, while I completely agree with you, and was confused by the same things, Ek very clearly told us NOT TO DO THE MATH.

Seriously, he was done before he left the last time!!! Never did earn his salary. So yeah, I’d bet against him.

He’ll sign for a small contract with the Jets to take a cup run with his home town team.

Thanks for the update and paying attention to not doing the math. I changed it though. He’s been feeling the effects of this for five years, but he’s actually only been out of the game for three.

Isn't there a specific date that a player must be signed by in order to play in that season? I thought it was around the end of December that if a free agent hasn't signed a contract yet then they have to wait until the next season. If that's the case then Toews wouldn't even be able to come back this year, no?

edit: nvm, I looked it up and I think that must be RFA's only. RFA's must sign by Dec 1st or miss the season.

So close...

He last played in 2023 (mid-April), and we are just now starting 2025.

*uses calculator to check math*

= basically 1.5 years.

I believe he needs to be signed by Mar 7th (TDL) in order to be eligible for the PO's this year.

Quite possibly the most overrated player in league history. Well over 1,000 games played, and he’s eclipsed 80 points one time. 70 points just twice.

Certain players win scoring titles, others play a 200’ game, shut down the other teams top line, score big goals and win Cups. Yeah, overrated.

I’m not saying he isn’t a decent player, just that he’s overrated. Here we are, getting our hopes up about him at age 37.

Robert Horry won a $hit load of NBA titles on stacked teams too. Doesn’t make him Kobe Bryant

You know, there are other responsibilities to being a great 1C other than just scoring points. I'm pretty sure that McDavid would trade his scoring titles for one cup, let alone three.

Shocker: Ice hockey is one of the most team dependent games in pro sports, and good defense is just as critical as good offense.

He was part of or leading teams that:
Won gold in 2 Olympics, World Championship, World Juniors
Selke
Conn Smythe
3 cups

Literally any team in the league would love to have him on their team in his prime. I'd doubt he has any real chance of coming back, but to say he is the most overrated is just ignorant. Sure it's an opinion, but one not based on any real evaluation.

Put it this way, no Toews on those Hawks teams, and they’re lucky to win one cup, let alone three. Can Toews help a team win a cup now? I doubt it, so I’m with you there, however in his prime he was a beast. Also add a NCAA championship to his resume.

It really depends on what he wants to accomplish. If he is looking for a one last run at a cup, then he will most likely go to some contender at a minimal salary and it will be a crap shoot whether he even gets ice time if he struggles out of the gate. If he is the leader everyone says he is, he might sign with a non contender just to get ice time and see if he still has it. Then sign somewhere else next year. Unfortunately I see him in the same light as Couturier and father time is not kind to that skill set.
