Seriously though. Leafs still lead the division. Don't make a dry spell seem like the end of the world. Go study the tape, practice, and move on to winning games again.

Leafs and Lightning have something in common that might explain their recent struggles : PDO

The Leafs are 5th and the Lightning are 4th in the league. That means they are leaning on a combo of three possible things : elite shooting, elite goaltending, and luck. Teams with high PDO typically regress at some point because even the best shooters have dry spells and the best goalies have streaks of average play or the odd bad game.

The Leafs are a team that leans heavily on their elite shooters to win games. If those guys are hurt, get shut down, or have off nights, then this recent string of poopty results is a sign that it's time to tighten up, get more depth scoring, and get into playoff hockey mode. Just relying on your top line or two, or power play, to stack points is not a good plan this late in the season when the races for positioning heat up.

The Lightning got shut out by Detroit and their no-name goalie. Kucherov's stick went silent. Their having some of the same issues as the Leafs : no depth scoring and not quite good enough goaltending (injuries haven't helped the Leafs in the latter regard, and the Lightning's backup sucks).

Leafs aren't getting depth scoring or scoring from their D. Their goaltending isn't elite enough to compensate for that on a long term basis. Berube has to fix it.

Lost a game on the flukiest of all goals while missing JT, Knies, and Stollarz. Let's definitely freak TF out here.

Help is on the way, though, Marner and all his giveaways are off to Van city for Miller plus. Ek said so.
