Good blog.

Yeah, penalties have been a problem for a few years on this team. Part of it was lack of talent, getting out played and being forced/goaded into taking penalties. My hope is that their recent play might make them more conscious of their ability to manage games with their own play and, as a result, help minimize the stupid penalties.

Time will tell.

As for the defense, yeah, they are a lot more active and ending up putting themselves in tight spots. I am somewhat OK with that, as the aggressive play has been a hallmark of their win streak. But if the Defense are being aggressive, the forwards need to recognize that and cover.

In fairness, we have seen improvement on coverage, but it is not perfect.

Also, it is nice to know that if they are down a goal or two, they can come back in a game. But that cannot be a habit.

Then again, a 3-0 lead was a deathblow to this team, so what do I know.

I get what you're saying but it feels like they did a better job at picking their spots before the last few games.

I do want Hutson, Matheson and all the guys that can move the puck to make plays and take chances, but it cannot end in as many turnovers as it did lately.

I'm sure they'll go back to playing at their best soon enough.

I think also, the team is still learning to play with Hutson.

You never know what he is going to do - I suspect all players on the ice are in the same situation - they have gotten better at recognizing when his spot needs to be covered, but the forwards sometimes miss the assignment, which is really noticed if a turnover occurs.

I like Carrier and Guhle together, would hate to split up that tandem.

I am just not sold on Hutson and Matheson playing together.

Yeah, I feel like that's the long term plan. Hence why I made a small mention that, depending on how Reinbacher looks this year and the next, it might have a big impact on what Montreal decides to do with Matheson.

And for what it's worth, I like Matheson, he's not perfect but he's a damn good hockey player.

Matheson is a good stop-gap defensemen to have around during the rebuild, take pressure off the kids.

I like him, but I do not see him at a top 2 long-term option.

As a hockey nation, Canadians wear shin/knee guards by default every day.

Even to bed.

The jofa helmet - the next best thing to not wearing a helmet at all for those who complained about helmets.
