Being a goalie must suck. You have one mediocre season after an injury to the thing you need to do the job and a very bad playoffs and you go from the best in the business to a pile of poop in two seasons. Then when you are literally the second best in the world again, people treat it like a shock and that he's "doing better."

The Tampa fanbase never lost faith in him. They're a loyal tribe, if nothing else. Even his statistically-worst season had him hovering around league average.

Vintage Vezina Vasi has a MO (nice alliteration). He might give you an early goal to get your hopes up, then he locks it down. He's back in that groove where you aren't getting three goals past him in a typical game. You'll be lucky to get two, but not three.

To be fair, some of the credit goes to McDonagh, who has shored up their defense.

Nobody, including the Leafs, want Vasi dialed in like this when the playoffs come around.

They are the sleeping giant of the East.

Want nothing to do with them in the playoffs without significant upgrades.

Could end up 3rd in the division without upgrades too.

I know you're sort of poking here, but it's sort of an interesting race . . . Right now there's about 25 games left in the season and in the East you can be pretty confident that Washington is making the playoffs and then can also pencil in Toronto, Florida, Tampa Bay, Carolina and the Devils. Those six aren't locks, but they sure feel like sound picks. That leaves Detroit, Ottawa, Boston, Montreal, Columbus, the Rangers and Philly fighting over two spots.

According to Moneypuck those spots are going to Ottawa and Detroit. Hockey Reference would include Columbus in that mix and even give them an edge over the other two.

I know Detroit is hot right now and I'd be inclined to think they keep it up. The Sens were on such a great tear it brought Spatso out of the shadows, but they've lost 4 straight, so he's gone back into his primordial ooze to wait.

I think, despite how awful they've been, I don't want to count out the Rangers. I don't know what happened to them. Lafreniere started the year looking like he was going to have a breakout campaign and now he looks awful. Panarin started the year looking to be a top-5 scorer and now he looks disinterested and isn't even trying. If I were Drury, I'd at least try the Hail Mary and fire Laviolette since the team simply isn't responding. You have 24 games. A 15 - 9 finish would very likely get them in the playoffs; it feels like a 91 pts and you're in type of year. I'd imagine if Drury does nothing else, he's gone anyway and may never be an NHL GM again.

Ottawa, for the record, also has 62 points but they have 25 games. If they went 15-10, they'd have 92 points (like the Rangers in the above scenario). They'd lose a tie-breaker to the Rangers, but realistically the Rangers won't go 15-9 and that would get the Sens in.

The Habs have 24 games left and for them to get to 92 points They'd need 16-7-1. That's tough.
