I mean, if Zito was really the genius you say he is he could have kept Montour for the same money as he’s paying Jones without giving up a first and Knight.

Please Leafs don't respond. We don't need to give up first rounders and young players for an average player that's well overpaid

The Leafs don't have much draft capital, so yeah, keep the first rounder as next year's draft should be better

Zito got duped. Jones is a mediocre player, and as mentioned in a previous post, they could have kept Montpour for that price.

Jones was grossly over paid but he’s still a serviceable d-man. He’s easier to stomach at 7 than 9.5MM.

He's not bad, but 7 million plus a first and young goalie, too much for me. Hasn't done anything of note in a few years and is now entering his 30s. Can he excel or will he be unable to adapt to playoff action he's seen very little of in recent years.

Here in Toronto we were questioning MR making 7.5 and if he's worth it or if we should move on. Is Jones that much better, if he's been better at all? Plus the assets given up.

Leafs need to find a way to unload MR at the draft. For now they need to find an OD like Parayko or Dobson. I have no faith that either Cowan or Minten will be impact NHLers. Might become fringe 2nd line player players at best but mostly 3rd liners. If you can get a piece or 2 at TDL that has more impact for a deep run I say go for it. Same concept with picks….it’s an unknown quantity

Leafs need to go on actual playoff run this year. If they don't, unloading should be done in bulk.

No, they couldn’t have. Knight, and his cap hit, wouldn’t have brought much over the summer. His play this season has restored value to him as a trade chip. They wouldn’t have room for Jones, like they didn’t have room for Montour, without moving Knight. Plus, I think the funny trade deadline cap math helps them get under the cap, too.

We’ll see how it works out. Hawks certainly got a good goalie.

jones will shine on 5x5 where his number are mediocre for years due to being on .....teams. How was many of the roster players in FLA before they came on the team? Forsling waived, Reinhardt regarded as just an open net goal scorer in Buffalo, Bennett a non-factor on the Flames.....and many other players. Zito has found a niche of those that can thrive in their system. I have never been keen on Jones, but as a betting man you have to go with this move. Yes, hurts to lose a franchise goalie and Chicago will think years from now they had the better hand in this trade, but for now barring any crazy injuries this seemed like the right move.

Thet which you say is accurate. However it is amazing when you look around the league how many big fast experienced second pair guys exist? What bothered myself the most about Jones is his inability or even unwillingness to improve on stopping his man from skating through him.

And what kind of season, what effect- even what numbers - do you get from S Jones when he is surrounded by a deep solid GOOD roster?

You have to go first it when im position to seriously make the finals again. How often do you get so far?

Oh the Leafs is a better team.on paper and on the ice compared to last season. I think the defense and goaltending has been better and Nylander has stepped up too although Matthews has not stayed healthy and scored as much. The coach and his system counts for much of their improvement but still in the grueling playoff march does 1) Marner show up enough? 2) Is the blueline crew sturdy and strong enough to survive- big maybe response to both my last two points

Hmmm Jones while available was considered by Toronto. or fans or TSN to be a great fit for Toronto, a great add to the leafs defence but of course they didn't want to give up anything to get him; but now he's gone and is a bum not worth a 7 m cap hit and not a worthy D....only in Toronto cause every one wants to go there and be part of their cream puffs
