A Speculative Fiction

A new iron curtain drawn across the 49th parallel. Cut all diplomatic ties as we expel all American dignitaries and issue a nation-wide travel advisory for any others left inside. Nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. The burned out shells of south-bound traffic lay strewn along a cold stretch of would-be interstate. Still visible below their charred remains: Pax Americana plates. Your stupid (frank)ing laser-pucks™ were just the start. And while you may stand six full cubits and a span, we got a shepherd’s sling and five stones in our hand and the battle of 1812 lives in our hearts. We don’t care if we’re destroyed. We’ll never capitulate. We’ll take the whole (frank)ing world down with us in flames. Just a speculative fiction. No cause for alarm. We got a good 15 years left ’til the United We Stand murals on West Broadway finally fade and we wave good-bye to such sad, childish refrains. Replaced with other stupid lullabies like you can have my guns when you pry them from my cold dead hands. Just a speculative fiction. No cause for alarm.

So, the new tandem kayak is too chonky and bulbous shaped to fit securely into the bed of my truck when loaded with another tandem kayak.

Usually I can fit two kayaks, but this new one has a fat/wide profile that I didn't properly account for before purchasing.

Now I have to get really creative with the tie down straps, or trade this kayak for a different one that will fit. Problem is, I want to load two tandems. A tandem and a skinny single works. But so far, two wide tandems is a non-starter.

Had to abort this week's fossil hunting trip because of this.

Sounds like you need truck bed crossbars.

That's not a bad idea, but I hope I don't have to go that far with my jerry rigging. A roof rack is out of the question, but a utility rack for the bed would work. Lifting those heavy bastards that high would be an issue though. One weighs 80 pounds dry.

I hear you. I only haul one rig but it’s also fairly heavy. I installed Boonedox landing gear so I only have to lift one end to wheel it up to my van.

You could also try a t-bar that plugs into the trailer hitch outlet. Then maybe you could push one rig all the way in and leave the other one farther out. Just a thought.

I saw him at the Toronto airport once. He was wearing a nice cashmere coat and looked pretty damn good.

I liked when Norm MacDonald hosted the Canadian Screen Awards and kept telling the audience that award itself is now called a Candy.

Seconded. Loved that guy and never read a bad word about him. Seems like one of the genuinely nice guys in an industry not known for nice people.

My previous truck was a full-size F-150 with a 6-foot box. It could handle three kayaks stacked on top of each other like a pyramid, laying flat in the bed with the tailgate down. Tied through scupper holes to the bed cleats and then strapped over the top.

This truck is a crew cab that has a nice big comfy backseat for passengers, but a short 4-foot box in the back. I usually load two kayaks side by side with the butt-ends up against the cab wall and the pointy ends sticking out over the top of the closed tailgate at an angle. Tied and strapped. A third won't fit on top and I knew that. What I didn't take into account is that the bed is slightly more narrow and a little more shallow than the old F150. The bed isn't just shorter, it's a little smaller in every other dimension. That and the weird positioning of the tie-down cleats (near the bed top), makes it nigh impossible to get three kayaks or two fat kayaks in there. One fat and one skinny will barely work.

I am going to get out there this week sometime and get jiggy with it and try a different configuration with the tail gate down and see if that works. If that fails, it looks like I won't be taking three other people with me to hunt. Two can come and one will have to stay home. Or, I need to figure out something else quick, because fossil season is short and opportunities to hunt are limited by scheduling. Time will be running out soon for this year.

Sorry for the long off-topic diatribe about kayaks.

I see your problem now. The newer crew cabs aren’t much better than an suv as far as the bed goes. My fishing kayak is only 10’6” and it slides completely into my minivan right up to the dash and I can close the hatch. This works great for me because I can load it up the night before and not have to worry about theft.

One word solution?

Trailer!

If you have space for it I suppose.

I’d have a kayak trailer if I was confident in my ability to operate it safely. I’ve never towed anything and I can see it now, first prize on funniest videos.
