I agree with Larkin. Yzerman did nothing to improve the team last summer and did nothing to improve during the season (aside from firing a coach that should have been fired a month earlier at the latest) or deadline. It's time for him to improve the team or give his place to someone who will. I have zero patience for his garbage UFA signings or bad trades anymore. Either play the prospects or sign the right UFAs for once or both. |

Yzerman explained exactly why he didn't make any moves.
Larkin needs to stop whining and actually carry the team on his back, like Stutzle and Suzuki did.
Larkin disappeared after the 4 nations.
This can very well buy Larkin a ticket out of town fast. |

I don’t think Larkin has been “whining”. Whether he used the best scenario to voice concern is up to the player and the office. He’s given Detroit 4 straight 30 goal seasons, come back from a broken neck, and stood in front of the press no matter how bad it was. The UFA and TDL markets were way overpriced, and I think Yzerman tried to get players but wasn’t willing to part with a first or Kasper which are coming out as asking prices. I think the dust will settle and the office will be watching the Griffins very closely this week. |

Man, Jeremy....you sure kicked the hornet's nest on this one!!!
Jersey will be there on the 29th, btw. Got it at Intersport McElevrey's in Killarney, and it's an official jersey 😎.
Ok, so Larkin/TDL/UFA.....Not sure where to begin. Larkin's pissed....Join the club, Sparky. He's fought through injury, slumps, crappy coaching, crappy UFA, crappy TDL....the last 9 years have been rough, is what I'm trying to say. Maybe he realizes he's not getting younger and wants to sniff the Cup. Whatever his motivation, I don't think what he said wasn't said in front of Yzerman before-hand. And I'm sure that IF it was said 1st, Yzerman probably had something less than Silky to say back. Larkin fell off post-4N, but for goodness sake -NO ONE'S carried a team like Larkin. He's getting some "support" (Rayzor, Mo, Eddy, Kane, Kasper), but we would fare so much better with a super-star...and a G....and better D......
Listen, I come from 39yrs of military service so my take's gonna be from that perspective: His words, to me, were border-line disrespectful. That being said, he was expressing frustration but wasn't being a punk. I think he took the mantle of Captain to heart, combined the concensus of the room to Yzerman, said what to let the public know they see the issues and are aware..... But it did sound kinda whiney.....don't female dog about it, DO SOMETHING about it!!!

I wouldn’t take that source for granted. If true, then we’ll see it play out. If Yzerman said that to Larkin, Yzerman, in my mind, is in the wrong. They’ve made Larkin jump through hoop after hoop |

Many thanks as always! Larkin may have picked his spot poorly, but as you said he is expressing what many are feeling. I don’t think anyone has sacrificed more for the team. If Yzerman undressed him in front of a group like that, not good. Fences will need mending but I think the quote itself in substance is getting overblown. It’s not Roy telling his team leadership he’ll never play another game for them. That clip has made the rounds. I just posed the question and yep, hornets nest. At least it’s a chance for people to vent! Primal scream therapy |

A real Tears for Fears moment?? Lord, I'm old.
Frustrations are boiling over. I think what we have are archetypical Alpha personalities fighting for the same thing, but not fully aware of the machinations of the other. That inevitably leads to strife. Sensitive communications (e.g., between the GM and other player's agents regarding coming to the team) shouldn't be shared. But there's GOT to be a sacred trust betwren Larkin & Yzerman......this IS HockeyTown afterall. They should ve able to vent between themselves. They both want the same thing, but they've GOT to work this out.
Those 2 articles are damning. If Kane has to jump in, that shows his committment to this team, and frankly; HE'S of more value than 95% of the team, AND he's the consummate professional. Yeah, this is WAY more serious than indicated across most of thr media; there's trouble and they need to hash it out then Larkin needs to clear the air in the room WITH Yzerman there.
To me, the big thing is Yzerman's not a saint in this; he's got to own his screw ups to the players to re-gain their buy-in. I've fallen on my sword a few times in front of folks, and it hurts the ego a bit, but those teams were stronger for it. |

Don’t take anything for granted. Double/triple source. This is the first many of us are hearing about that event and there is a lot of speculation mixed in. If this has legs, it will get picked up. Always look for the second and third source |

Wholly agree. I think, just for me, I'm so torn about this whole thing. The bulk of your readers are SOOO frustrated w/The Captain, myself included. But then you remind us of impact of trading off assets (long-term assets) for a HOPEFUL short-term result, etc... I wanted Cuzens at the TDL, but as you so adroitly pointed out - the prices were WAY too high.
We're sick of the "rebuild" taking so long, sick of crap UFA vet fillers. But, again as you point out, this team was essentiallytorn down to Toledo and is being systematically rebuilt to be a sustaining competitor from The Coast league to the Big Club. And I understand that. I can't imagine the behind-the-scenes work being done. From my seat, I can't appreciate that level of work. So it's hard for me to have the grace of patience for the whole thing to come to fruition.
So when Larkin says what he did, I think "YEAH!! What HE said!!" I know guys here are sick of me saying this, but this IS a good team - top to bottom (aggregated, team-level, including the "A"). I personally have to be patient. But it's refreshing to see the guys in the room are just as frustrated as I am.
I don't think Larkin's going anywhere - it'd destroy the team. BUT, no one's above the law, and I do believe The Captain had a few choice words for Larkin.
Oh, hey; we were driving through Aden, Ireland and saw a pub named Larkin's!! I tried to stop but the roads were packed and I'd have had a National Lampoon's European Vacation moment if I did!!!@ |

Yzerman would probably have to part with at the very least a first round pick in order to ditch Larkin.
Worst contract ever. |

Yeah the Wings should have given a first and a prospect to lose in the first round. Bunch of whiners, I loved through the Dead Wings era and I'll live through this slump too. |

I hold Larkin fully accountable for 2022 and 2023 UFA shopping sprees.
Yzerman should have tanked for 2 more seasons, but because of all the whining from Larkin, he screwed it all up.
He got "reinforcements" and did absolutely nothing with it in regards to playoffs.
How much of a bump did Kane provide last year?
Still not enough for some, apparently.
We could have had 2023 and 2024 high draft picks knocking on the door already. |
|
|
|
lol this era is much worse than dead wing era. The dead wings never missed the playoffs this long. This is the complete joke era. |
|
|
|
All Yzerman had do this year was fire Lalonde much earlier as most people on here realized and basically bring back the defence from last year (Ghost,Walman and Maata ). And waive Holl and never sign Gus. These moves alone would have made us make playoffs. Yzerman actually made the team worse this year than the previous. |

Did that clown really suggest the Wings trade Larkin for a 35 year old 5'9, 165 pound defenseman and some picks? What a joke. Trading Larkin to the Wild (assuming he requests a trade given he has a full NTC) it would have to start with Rossi+...not some 35 year old small defenseman.
What we do know is this team was flawed from the start of the season when Yzerman failed to improve the defense and actually made it worst by letting Ghost go, trading Maatta and Walman. Wings let go of some of their offensive forward depth (one of the reasons they were near the bottom of the league in 5 on 5 goals). They were top 10 in 5 on 5 goals in 23-24 and they were tied for bottom 5 this season. Both years they had a top 10 PP and even top 5 this season.
Then you look at the PK who even though had 2 different coaching staff this season, ended at the very bottom of the league and 4th worst in NHL history. Wings were middle of the pack in 23-24 on the PK.
Faceoff was another issue. Top 10 in 23-24 and 22nd this season.
A lot of this ends up at the feet of the guy who build this team and that's Yzerman. He's made a lot of bad choices in the last few years with signings and trades. I don't blame Larkin one bit for being frustrated with Yzerman and the crap teams he has put together.
