Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: 2/17/12 PLUS Flyers-Penguins Ticket Winner - bmeltzer
Good recap on the game. The Flyers rallied well after the first period ended and they were down to ten forwards.
According to reports, Briere hurt his shoulder and not his head. Hopefully that's the case.
I like the Grossman addition as well. He's solid. He's exactly the kind of guy they needed to land-he's not going to hurt them defensively, they didn't have to trade a ton to land him(especially as you noted a kid like Cousins), he could probably end up getting re-signed if all goes well and it leaves enough cap/LTIR room to add another piece.

Lets hope these reports are correct.
It was great to see the offense come alive!
Bryz really settled in after the 1st period.

I really like the Grossman pick up, especially since we did not have to give up a roster player.
Also, I must mention that Andreas Lilja played a very good game last night. I want to give credit where credit is due.

Outside of the penalty, Lilja was solid last night. It was nice to see him step up. MAB & Gus played solidly, as well. |

I was out last night and caught the game on replay. This place must have been going berzerk for different reasons after those first two goals. That first one you could see developing a mile away...holy crap how does that happen? |

To be blunt, Claude Giroux stopped skating. So did Hartnell, but Giroux was the guy who should have had coverage. It was funny, Carchidi tweeted immediately that "no defensemen were near him" meaning Pominville...
Yeah, they were kind of busy covering the other two forwards.
The second one was all Bryz. Fortunately he seemed to shake of the rust and made a few difficult stops the rest of the way. He had some good luck for once, although his rebound control wasn't that great. |

Happened to catch a bit on WIP this morning and just gives me more incentive to not listen. As some already know I wasn't able to catch te game Last night but you would think the big story would be 7 goals after spotting the sabres 2. Nope. Cataldi instead blast them for being a mentally deficient team. Rips them up and down about being the scum of the league for two weeks and says not one word about them winning... |

I have a feeling that the wheeling and dealing is going to start gaining some momentum. A agree with much of yesterdays thought that a 3rd line shutdown center would be ideal. |

Last night coming home I was listening to about 5 different callers say that Timonen was done. I had to turn it off.

I just watched the game after an insane night at work, and while I don't agree with the fools at WIP, there is something to be said for the team coming out flat at home again. That was a brutal first period, one that would likely be fatal against a playoff caliber team. The second and third period were obviously much better in every aspect.
Would have love to been a fly on the wall during the first period intermission. I'm sure Mount Lava erupted. I see that POS Kaleta running guys and not answering for it yet again. |

Loved Simmonds and Read last night. Simmonds for obvious reasons and Read for being one hell of a smart and versatile player, I just love both their games.
Not to be negative because a 7-2 win is great but man that first period was dreadful and I had zero confidence in Bryz. He battled the puck all game and a few times was looking for the puck in totally the wrong direction. He did seem to get better as the game went along but he's going to have to be really on his game Saturday, I'm thinking he'll play.
Sestito sure looked like he had an upperbody injury as well, he got crushed.
The Flyers goons are not good at winning fights are they. |

They gotta start better and play better (60 minutes) at home no question.
I have no clue what happened but they were dreadful in the 1st. Lava might have to put the idiots in a hotel room the night before home games.

That pass over the sprawling d-man rite onto the tape of Scotty's stick for a tap-in, that was a thing of beauty!

It's crazy how terrible they are at fighting. Our most successful fighter (by a landslide IMO) is simmonds |

Simmonds is a great fighter.
When the Dubinsky's and Kassian's have no problemt fighting your goons you know nobody fears them. |

Sestito got hit with a big shot. Looks like he hyperextended his knee when he got pummeled with that haymaker.
With JVR's status up in the air, and now Briere injured again, Holmgren might have to go shopping for a forward. |

That was unreal.
I was thinking wire that puck Read but instead all nice and calm sauces a puck over for a tap in, just beautiful. |

Simmonds and Talbot have been unbelievable this year. Simmonds might score 30, and Talbot might get 20. I don't think anyone saw that coming. |

That's one of the best things about Grossman, still $3-$3.5mm left to add pieces, more with sending guys to the AHL or if they trade a roster player. |

Sestito was actually doing OK and he opened himself up and whammo.
That was a beauty punch. Kassian is a tough bastard, he can play the game as well. I would think that is your new breed of tough guy right there. A player who can actually play 10-14 minutes a game and fight |

After the quick start for both I could have seen 20 and 12 maybe but not this.
Kings fans said Simmonds was a 3rd liner who would score 15 tops. I guess that's why they're Kings fans |
