Bill Meltzer: Flyers Gameday: 3/8/12 vs. Panthers - bmeltzer
Flyers have alot of injuries but they cant use that as an excuse (not that they are). They need to continue to play hard and win these games to position themselves for a chance of home ice in the 1st round of the playoffs. |

According to Frank Seravalli, the Flyers have recalled Harry Zolnierczyk -- I thought they'd tab Holmstrom instead -- and defenseman Brandon Manning.
Not sure why they made a defense callup unless there was an unreported injury in the Detroit game. Erik Gustafsson was the only D-man at yesterday's optional skate, so can't go by that, either.

Everybody has injuries. Pittsburgh and Detroit could ice all star teams with their list of injured. Chicago's had key guys go down. |

I guess Harry Z has his chance to work out of Laviolette's doghouse. |

Bill- Last I read an Adirondack report from Tim McManus, Ben Holmstrom was out injured with an upper body injury. That was on March 4.
Perhaps the callup of Manning is to go with 7 d-men tonight. That doesn't make much sense though, if I'm not mistaken they have zero call-ups left for the final 17 games. |

Did somebody go on LTIR to make the call-ups possible?
And Bill, any idea why Lauridsen didn't make the Phantoms' clear-day list? Pretty strange omission, if he's not hurt.

I missed a bunch of games right before he was sent down, could you elaborate on how he got there in the first place? I thought they were pretty high on him earlier in the year. |

I believe the 23 man roster limit is no longer in play right now. |

Sorry, should have been more specific... meant room against the cap. |

Didnt he guarantee the Flyers would get Stamkos? Oh, and give the #1 star in Tuesdays game to Mark Howe? |

The game against Nashville (Flyers 4-1 win) Harry Z was late getting back that lead to a 2-1 goal by Suter. Z didn't see the ice again that night IIRC. |

Lack of defensive anything. He was lazy getting back, and for a 4th liner... thats what you need to do best. He uses his blazing speed to get in deep, but wasnt responsible in his own end. |

That's a good question. I would assume JVR is on LTIR, since he's down for 4-6 weeks, not sure that would leave enough cap room for all these call ups. |

Emergency call ups don't count against the 4 allowed call-ups. If you don't have at least 12 healthy forwards and 6 healthy defensemen, you can make emergency call ups. |

JVR would be the obvious LTIR candidate.
Lauridsen isn't hurt as far as I know. He has had a rough time for much of the season, from what I've heard. He is still a rookie, albeit a slightly older one because of his three collegiate seasons.

Good. Because if anyone thinks they won't need emergency call-ups over the final 17 games, they would have to have their head examined. |

Seravelli reporting that JVR has been LTIR'd to make cap room. Someone asked a bit earlier.....

I have always felt that it's a stupid rule. Not only does it keep teams from using players it is paying, but it's easily circumventable. |

I don't have a problem with the rule. If a team is crippled by injuries, they shouldn't have to play with a short lineup, every team should always be given the chance to ice 20 players, unless they put themselves in a bind cap wise. |

I mean the 4 call ups after the TDL rule. If a team has the room, they should be able to make as many recalls as they want. Say you have a team like Montreal, they might want to see what some of the kids in Hamilton can do. Why limit them to 4 recalls? |

Oh, I misunderstood you. Definitely. I agree with you on this. |
