Tim, I agree that it's very unlikely Bryz will be ready to go.

Ragnarsson had to have surgery after badly breaking his left index finger in Game 3 of the 2004 ECF against Tampa and that was actually the injury that kept him out of the rest of the playoffs.

Ragnarsson dressed in 14 of 18 playoff games that year, missing games 4,5,6 and 7 of the conference finals. The best-case prognosis for his return was three weeks from the time of the surgery, so a return at any point in the Tampa series was probably out of the question, even though he was asked and refused to try to come back for Games 6 and 7.

Of course, we've both seen players "miraculously heal" in the postseason (AKA play with injuries they have no business playing with because it's the playoffs). But I personally don't fault a player who just had surgery for not moving up his timetable by several weeks when he still couldn't grip a stick, even in a must-win playoff situation.

From what it sounds like, and granted it's a big grain of salt considering the team's past pronouncements of injuries and timetables, that it's a matter of pain management, not something that puts Bryzgalov at future risk.

Now, obviously if there's a chance it worsens or becomes a problem he'll have to deal with down the road, there's no way you rush back. The Flyers have an investment to protect.

However, if it's simply a case of pain management, I think he could be playing. The key then becomes, how effective can he be. Reading the medical websites, when there's a chip fracture, or as most of the sites refer to it an avulsion fracture, there's also tissue damage and it often occurs near a joint.

From what the team has said-and again, big grain of salt-it seems more that Bryzgalov has a small bone chip and not the associated tissue injury.

It really depends on the proper information, which likely none of us have, given how the Flyers guard injury information.

I think that the "prognosis" is more of an indictment of the medical staff than anything else. If this really is a chip fracture there is no way "pain management" will allow for Bryz back this week. So, either it isn't really a chip fracture, or the Dr's/Homer are dreaming.

I think it doesn't really matter as they are in the playoffs. And that THIS is the reason you don't trade Bob. Teams have 2 goalies for a reason. Time for Bob to shoulder the load for a bit.

To me, there is very little question the Flyers hoist the cup in 2004 with just a little less injury misfortune.
