It would be really weird seeing Salo in a Hawk jersey. He would be a really great pickup as a bottom pairing d-man though. Solid in his own end and a great shot for the PP. Can play in every situation. O'Brien would drive you guys crazy with his stupid penalties and getting caught out of position way too much for a guy who should be a stay at home d-man. Samuelsson would be a nice add on a one year deal to help the PP out.

Hawks would be a scary team with Suter as long as you guys can get decent goaltending.

Could a Sami Salo or a Mikael Samuelsson, a couple of long in the tooth veterans whose best days are clearly behind them, nonetheless still provide some power play, limited minutes value?

Salo and Samuelssom sound like Brunette and O'Donnell to me. If that's what the front office intends to do, lord help us.

The Hawks D would be terrifying if they added Suter. Although personally, I think he's headed to the Wings. Way too many whispers this season about Detroit for there not to be something there.

I'll be honest....if Suter is a 'target' of the Tomahawk, SOMEONE in the core is GONE. How else do the numbers work ?

JJ, nice digging-----and I hate to be a "nattering nabob of negativism," but NONE of these names excites me one iota. If i had to choose....Allen and Campbell would be the most acceptable.

He's a perfect plug in for the suddenly mortal Nick Lidstrom.

I think a lot of it is "media speculation that turns into truth." My sources say Minnesota or Chicago are more likely. But Detroit could be serious contenders.

Geography will be big in his decision (specifically, proximity to Madison), I have that from someone close to his family.

That's if Lidstrom retires. If Lidstrom comes back for another go-around, Detroit could be out of the Suter sweepstakes.

That's asuming Lidstrom is ready to hang 'em up.

You also have to realize, Suter will DEFINITELY look at the Wings roster and realize that at the end of this contract, Datsyuk, Franzen and Zetterberg will be gone or nearly done.

With the exception of Hossa, ALL of Chicago's top guys will be in their primes.

Detroit is NOT a shoo-in on this.

Could the Wings afford Suter even if The Legend retires ?

Salo>O'Donnell. He was playing top 4 mins for us most of this season and was probably our most reliable and consistent d-man after Hamhuis.

They have quite a bit of cap space if he does retire so they can definitely afford him.

Yes, it all hinges on what Lidstrom does....but JJ...if Suter is targeted, can we safely assume that at least one core player is GONZO ?

Their free space this summer is about the same as the Hawks if Lidstrom doesn't retire. They can afford him, but they have more free agents of their own than the Hawks do 9that they'll want to keep) and they'll likely lose Stuart then.

I would be shocked and horrified if Montreal didn't lock down Emelin. It took a little time to acclimate himself to the north american game, but once he did he turned into a very reliable defenceman and a hitting machine

No, possible, but not necessary. Lose Oduya's money, Brunette's and, deal one middling salary and they can afford him and still sign their own guys.

Perhaps they could. They have $20 million in cap space. I figure if Lidstrom re-signs, he'll be a minimum $5 million dollar salary. I'm betting Suter will get $7 million wherever he goes. That's $12 million right there, maybe $13 million before it's all said and done.

That still leaves them $7 million or $8 million to either re-sign or fill holes for Holmstrom, Hudler, Quincey, Abelkader, Helm and possibly a back up goalie. Re-signing Quincey and Hudler could possibly eat up most of that $7 million. Abelkader and Helm would probably get modest raises. If Holmstrom doesn't retire, he could come back on the cheap. In all, they might lose a couple of guys out of that group.

This is not figuring in an adjustment to the salary cap. If the cap goes up, they could have the room to pull it off.

If Carle doesn't get resigned by Philly in the next month or so it's because the flyers are eying Suter. Carle is willing to take a discount to stay in Philly from what I've heard and there is no one but Suter better in FA. I know you say location will be a part of the decision.... But my guess is its not THE biggest part of the decision. I'm guessing but the promise of a first pairing in Philly will be enticing. The promise of big money and playing alongside youngsters like Giroux, Couturier, Schenn, Simmonds, Voracek, JVR, etc will be pretty enticing. I'm not saying the hawks are not going to get Suter.... I'm saying watch out for the flyers because they have a lot to offer which could be more important than location.

Edit: I should add that I hope Suter stays in Nashville.... And Weber is the one Philly lays big money on. It will be interesting to watch the next couple months
