Eric Smith: Jackets Go Crease Crazy In This Year's Draft Any time you hear a team that says they draft the best player off the board, know that is not usually completely true. Especially for a team like the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Dansk was the best player on the board a the time he was taken. After that, it is really up to which board you look at as too who should have gone where. The Flyers took a goalie over Dalton Thrower and that went over like a lead balloon...but again "best player available" and what they at least added was "on our scouts lists".

Dansk and Bob give the Jackets a goaltending future. And goalies are always a premium. You can get a lot in return for a "prospect" goalie....

Not a bad draft by columbus.. they needed Goalie prospects and got them.. Im a little concerned about the forward ranks but I suppose they are going to try to replenish those with the Nash trade...

I hope for CBJ fans this is true but it's too early to declare the future bright in net for the Jackets. It is not too early to declare that Bob is an upgrade on Mason.

Wonder what Mason sends Hitchcock for Christmas each year - he has approx 3 million reasons to make it something nice for the next two years.

Not that I am complaining , but I was sure Howson was going to go for Gally, Murray looks good and all with his safe playing style, only problem is that guys like Murray there are of plenty in league.

Drafting Gally may seem like a gamble but if it pays off thats instant offense up front, something we needed I find, Nash would of brought back an nhl ready defensmen anyways in his trade return. This draft showed me Howson lost confidence in himself it seems.

Of course unless, Brian Burke is the one doing the rebuild , but I guess if you have 10 years as a fan where playoffs don't matter because you don't wanna come in @ 7th or 8th

Hope he doesn't say that this year considering the 8th place team won the cup

As a fellow CBJ fan I have to disagree with this part of your post. Murray has the potential to be a true #1 defenseman, which there are not plenty of in the league. In fact I would have to say the CBJ have never had a true #1 d-man since they have existed, unless you want to say JJ is one.

But I do agree that we needed forwards and still do.

A solid top four defender ,is always worth his weight in gold .Murray wont disappoint
.Even if he doesnt end up a big point producer ,he has the size speed and awarness to be the cornerstone of your blueline

So Howson doesn't have to take responsibility for a brutal draft (Dansk aside).

Any draft is random. We had two solid first picks and the rest can go either way. You don't normally see more than 30% of the 3rd round even make the NHL, so it wasn't as brutal as we're making it. (I mean We DID pick the 2nd and 3rd highest ranked Non-NA goalies)

I do agree that Bozon might have been a better choice 3rd and Anderson was pointless.

Yep, that's how most teams do it. The scouts knew it was coming when their contracts hadn't been renewed. Should they have fired them 2 days before the draft so they could inform other teams of their draft plan? Think before you type.

No one is defending Howson or CBJ management in general. But I find it hilarious that you have to go to a CBJ message board to feel better about yourself. Get a life.
