Agreed. Just because he's in the paper doesn't make him "mainstream media". He's like some other bloggers on HB that just say wacky things to get hits.

The smarter owners in pro sports understand this, support it, and make more money because of it…
- pmccann

They understand it.

They support it - begrudgingly.

And no, teams like the Leafs certainly do not make more money because of it.

The only way I'd be for enhanced revenue sharing (if by that, you mean more money from the highest earners) is if 4 or 5 teams are moved or folded and the criteria for qualifying for subsidies is changed. The receiving teams should have to present to the league how they plan to increase their own generated revenue and should be able to show some gains over the course of 5 seasons. It makes no sense to perpetually prop up a team that has no hope of ever being profitable.

Not saying revenue sharing doesn't work or shouldn't be in place but come it's always implied that the owners must share their revenues? How come there's no "salary sharing" among the players?

There actually are conditions - you have to be growing your revenues at a pace greater than the NHL as a whole is growing, or your "share" of revenue sharing is cut back.

And you have to average over 14,000 tickets per game, although we all know that there are ways around that.

Like the Florida Panthers allowing anyone with a FLA driver's license into the game.

Yeah I know that there's already criteria but it definitely needs to be changed. You're right, attendance numbers are a complete joke. As for growing revenue, I don't know what the numbers are but has Phoenix ever shown significant growth in revenues? I really don't understand how that team still qualifies.

I think this blog and your post proves quite the opposite.

Nice try.

Also, Tony does not represent or iterate the common opinion or poise of Vancouver in any way shape or form.

He is the Damien Cox of the West.

If you miss targets, you still get revenue sharing. You just don't get as much.

They don't now, but the idea is to grow the sport to reel in more fans, the casual fans. Contracting teams, making the pool smaller and being provincial is the best way to ensure hockey stays closer to lacrosse than to baseball and football as a major sport in North America.

The labor strife alone has scared off a lot of corporate money in my town, as well as the low budget, bottom of the standings hockey we had, until recently, seen here. And after a largely successful season for the Note, here we go again with this lockout bullsh1t. Morons.

I don't think anyone is saying that the bigger money teams shouldn't have some advantage - buying out deals or burying bad contracts in the minors are good examples of this.

If you eliminate revenue sharing, then some teams won't even be able to afford the cap floor, mostly because the NHL TV deal is a joke.

Very arrogant by the vancouver guy. One thing that will make everyone happy and still have revenue sharing is imposing a luxury tax on teams that go over.

ps Nashville is my favorite team in the west

Nobody takes Tony too seriously here, BUT having said that, I wouldn't discount the notion for a moment as long as the NHL is forced to own teams like Phoenix and subsidize New Jersey.....

1. The NHL will probably own New Jersey by the end of the summer.

2. You know PJ was correct, right?

Well, PJ was correct.

So Ek doesn't smell bad on that one.

You may want to change your location.
