Considering Hatcher still looks like he could be playing, I can understand why young, inexperienced defensemen might get happy feet during a drill. Wilcox sounds very intriguing.

Outstanding coverage as usual, Bill! This was a particularly good read. I was wondering what your thoughts were on the NHL's initial offer to the NHLPA. It sounds more or less like a declaration of war to me.

I'm actually surprised Hatcher is skating so much. I always thought a full knee replacement usually meant the end of such activity.

From tomorrow's scrimmage, yes. Unfortunately, I won't be able to go today. Today originally wasn't supposed to be a scrimmage day, and I set plans to take my son out today. I'll be there tomorrow.

It's only the initial proposal in a long negotiating process... the players will come back with something equally as unpalatable to the owners and they'll eventually meet in the middle somewhere.

Why is Schenn and Courtier not in this camp. They could use all the work possible.

There's absolutely nothing for either guy to gain -- except a possible injury -- from still participating in this sort of camp. Even guys like Manning and Lauridsen are basically around as mentors to the first-timers at the camp.

It was definitely an aggressive first proposal, but really that's all it was. The NHLPA knows that a lot of it is negotiable or are points the NHL will concede in exchange for concessions on the other side.

What it does show is that it's going to be a tough negotiation that, at bare minimum will come down to the 11th hour and more likely result in a delay to the start of next season.

Hope not. It won't bode well for the league. I'm not certain how many more work stoppages the NHL can handle.

There was some speculation that both sides discussed proceeding with the games under the old agreement as long as discussions are proceeding positively. I honestly can't see this happening but would definitely welcome it as I'm sure every other fan would. But when are our interests ever considered?

It sends an aggressive message. For all of Bettman's bluster about how strong the NHL is financially, plus the fact that the salary cap tied to hockey revenues has risen for six straight years, the NHL's proposal could be seen as a slap to the face of the NHLPA.

Larry Brooks reported that the NHL not only proposed an 11% decrease in the revenue split(which James Mirtle calculated would end up being a 19% reduction in salaries over the long haul), but that the NHL wanted to redefine "Hockey Revenue" to a far more narrow scope.

A little tweet from today's scrimmage. I think if Cousins even has a decent training camp, I think the team will give him a look at least for the first 8 games and make a decision like Coots last year.

What I'm taking from this is the NHL wants the rest of the league to foot the bill for the teams that are barely scrapping by.

The NHL voted to end the current CBA, rather than extend it until a new deal could be struck. There will likely be games lost. If they lose another season, I'm done with the NHL.
